Ransomware

I sure can't imagine how all those honorable banking people would not be extremely concerned and upset about having their precious repuation besmirched by any potential association with crooks of the lowest sort such as those you relate. You should inform the relevant parties at once, and I'm sure they'll rectify things pronto in your friend's favor!

(This message brought to you by the Banking-American Friendship association.)

How did it get on the machine? Wasn't it protected?
And you can always use a credit card to purchase, then deny and let the CC go after them and get your money back.

He got the malware because he's an idiot. He clicks yes to every retarded thing that pops up. His IE browser window is full of toolbars a full third of the way down the screen. I cuss him out, but then he just rolls another blunt and it's hard to stay mad at the kid.

We could pay and then contest, but wouldn't it be so much better if a Predator drone strike just killed whoever owns this company, along with five or ten "innocent" bystanders?

bloriMal 09-01-2011 11:37 PM

Can he go to a Restore point, prior to?

dHXaE2h9 09-01-2011 11:40 PM

I'm actually doing that now. I had installed BTS yesterday, and didn't want to lose that, but it's easy enough to reinstall. The Security Essentials didn't pick up ****, so now we have to go back a couple days.

I just can't get over the fact that this is legal. Why isn't there more of an outcry about this sort of corporate behavior?

EDIT: He wouldn't backup, but luckily it's automatic.

Buy someting and get it fixed in an unauthorised shop - goodbye guarantee.

FailiaFelay 09-01-2011 11:59 PM

I could, and have, fixed this before. But it is impossible to fix without your credit card details I'm afraid http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...ilies/wink.gif

Ah, precious youth! How fast time flies.

We had a lot of fun in Denmark, I think, or maybe it was Helsingborg, or Hamburg. My memories are not, hvad man nu siger, up to par.
Helsingor to Hillerod, then up to Alborg where we drank frozen Akvavit and ate pickled herring. Those were the days... What was the topic again?

I'm pretty sure what it is doing isn't legal. It's hard to track them down to bring charges though.
I'm sure it's a petty matter, and the people who do internet crime are more interested in big money fraud, terrorism, and kiddie porn. But it just seems like the sort of annoyance that affects so many people, that it would be worth making a priority. I'm more likely to be struck by lightning than killed by terrorists, and I was never a cute enough kid to star in porn, so the government isn't really protecting me on the internet. They're protecting the few, and leaving the many to fix their friend's damn computers whenever they break.

I don't know about that. If you mean car warranties, it makes a lot of sense to me that the guarantee would expire if a non-authorized mechanic worked on it. It's a liability for them to offer the warranty, and they can't just take on unlimited liabilities for problems that may be caused by jackasses fiddling with things. If I were selling cars, and offered a warranty, I would consider it void if anybody I didn't trust poked their noses in it.

The proper american thig to do would be to have him pay an expert for it.

Why do you hate America? http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...lies/frown.gif

CialisBestPrice 09-02-2011 03:32 AM

It probably is illegal, just no one who's clicked on it so far has wanted to go to court to explain how they were high and/or furiously wanking off to LOTR fanfic when they accidently clicked "yes, infect my computer with your virus"...

boleroman 09-02-2011 05:02 AM

I got something similar, if not the same one, not too long ago (redirect from a google results link to an imdb page, AFAICT). Try Malwarebytes if you're still looking for a fix. You'll need to be in safe mode to get it on the machine and run it, of course.

Erossycuc 09-03-2011 12:39 AM

That might compel me to try and speak Danish to random people again and I want to avoid that. One of these days someone will think I'm a Danish spy and send me to Swedish Guantanamo (Gotland).

Patabeamn 09-03-2011 01:16 AM

Oh no, you must have misunderstood something. Finland isn't an enemy... It is a vassal.

Yyaqyped 09-03-2011 01:24 AM

The camps are on Visby, and guarded by the dreaded svart möter får.

Isn't that a bit racist, Sparky?
Actually the Gotland sheep, most common to Visby, all have black faces, regardless of the tone of their fleece.
