The two champs were locked in a dead heat after both managed to wolf down 59 hot dogs in this year's shortened 10-minute Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest. To break the tie, judges had had them chow down on another five hot dogs to determine a winner. Chestnut managed to down the dogs in just 60 seconds. Following the competition, Kobayashi said he just didn't eat those last five dogs fast enough. Competitive eaters of all shapes and sizes competed for the crown jewel of their sport this afternoon. The annual Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest kicked off at 12:40 p.m. The contestants weighed in yesterday at City Hall Park. "Actually this year because of my jaw injury I wasn't able to train very much in the in the gym, but because I can't train I focus on eating well and watching what I eat," said Kobayashi. "It would be ridiculous to go in there extremely confident, but I'm just going to go out there and give it my best and push hard on the Fourth of July," said Chestnut. Organizers knocked two minutes off the regulation time this year after it was discovered the original 1916 event was only 10 minutes long. |
