The city-limit population density of Anchorage, Alaska is exactly twice that of the United States (76.2/ sq. mi.), including Alaska itself. The figure does not include bears.

It is also one-sixth that of the country of India, including Himalayas.

As much as people around here like to hate on the Upper East Side west of Lexington (i.e., Yorkville), I think it's a great example of how we can do very high density living well. Sure, the apartment buildings are nothing to write home about, but the streets have a great retail scene, and largely devoid of chains. Lots of middle class still up there, riding the M86 bus.

^ In Manhattan, the densest tracts are wealthy or at least middle class.

The theory persists, however, that very high density is variously a symptom or cause of squalor.

Clearly it's neither.

How Do You Know When You're in the City?

When I wake up, I'm in the city. When I goto sleep, I'm in the city. Therefore, I always know I'm in the city. About the only time I leave Manhattan is to goto the airport. I'm either in the city, or I'm out of town.

For me now, its the energy which simply can't be replicated, or simply described atleast not like seeing the Twin Towers standing guard over New York, which used to be my answer. The energy of New York consists of many things combining together to let you know that you're in none other than New York New York.

When returning home from a long trip and seeing the gleaming skyline in the distance and get exctied to be home. I never like to leave my vacations, but as soon as I see the skyline I get excited and happy to be home again and pump the radio up and drive towards the kingdom in the distance.

That feeling gets me everytime and like Stren says can never be replicated.
