My dad was raised in northern Kentucky, suburbs of Cincinnati
Though that part of the state is definitely more Yankee than Rebel, considering that Cincy in its prime styled itself as Mini-New York Northern Kentucky is probably scenic. Southern Kentucky is very barren and as an outsider, a northern, all eyes were on my back and I felt them burn. I vainly tried Southern Kentucky culture which was a cave tour, and in Tennesse Jackson's House, hick culture. |
worst 3 states
1, Virgina - may be concidering excessive use tax on toilet paper 2, Texas- ugly cow disease 3, SouthCarolina- 50 dollar fine for each opened container [Beer cans] in your automoble. Do not push public to recycle Aluminum best 3 states North Carolina- their laid back West Vigina- Govenors mansion is a double wide moble home Kentucky- Drive through recycling [throw it out the window] We as a nation can joke between our selfs knowing that we are united, supporting our troups and will never forget 911. Their Blood Still Cries In fear they run in terror As buildings come falling down The dear brave souls, to save a life In ashes their bodies found At our nations brain of war, More blood spilled out that day Americans of honor Lost to coward ways In a field, more blood does cry With countless tears Their loved ones cry The call our nation Now at war From coast to coast Our anger soars To tell our children That question why? Least desirable states?
* Extreme poverty * Totalitarianism (or any non-free society) * Lack of concern for others Every state has desirable qualities or its residents would move. Nearly all of my generation (in my extended family) left West Virginia to seek better opportunities elsewhere. We gather once a year for a reunion and the plight of the state is discouraging and heartbreaking -- but its beauty is sublime. The Northern plains are facing difficult times but when they were priaries they were teeming with life. If states have become undesirable it is because people have created those extreme conditions. NYC was no paradise in the 1980's but I loved it just the same. I wish the thread had a more transformative title. |
Here goes nothing and on two hours of sleep.
All Time favorites: 1. California. Perfect weather, the coast has a moderated climate that almost always clears up before noon. The only exception being San Francisco which is almost always covered in fog, I think Mark Twain once said the coldest winter he ever experienced was a summer in San Francisco, he’s right. Also northern California with its ancient red woods and Yosemite Park is a must see. My favorite California cities are in SoCal, LA, San Diego, and Venice Beach all are lots of fun and its virtually impossible to be bored. 2. Utah. Probably the best experiences of my life scratch Salt Lake City. The scenery is breathtaking. The middle of the state is great for mountain climbing and amazingly greenery. I remember I met some of the nicest people there, Mormon’s are weirdoes but they are great people too. Characteristic of the south of the state is Bryce Canyon, the state was once covered with salt, hence salt lake, and I do not recommend visiting the lake. Anyways the salt creates some of the most astounding landforms you will ever see, they defy conventions. I remember at one Lake, its name has right now slipped my memory , anyways I set up camp near its banks, and the land forms would sometimes soar maybe 100 feet above it and its lots of fun jumping from that high! But there were caves in the water and all these little abysses as a result of the states geological past. I remember the banks were cluttered with thousands of giant trees, washed up, and I swear that night I had to have made one of the world’s largest bon-fire’s…. 3. New York City. For having the best City in world! Least Favorite States: 1. Mississippi. I remember I went down there and the coast had million dollar homes and right in there back yard were some of the most decrepit homes you would ever see, needless to say they still treat blacks like they were slaves. At the same time I was there they were rallying to bring back the confederate flag. 2. Louisiana. New Orleans is probably one of the worst cities I have ever been to. It’s poor and dirty and reflects the state. Its world famous Bourbon Street is disgusting. Furthermore it’s a pain in the ass to find authentic food there, and there is no public place in the entire city to cool off, the waters are too polluted. 3. Kentucky. Bunch of red neck hicks. |
There are so many levels to judge this on....
Worst States 1) Utah - Beautiful landscape, but a Mormon Theocracy 2) Texas - Ugly Flat and a solid right wing conservative government bent of working outside our democratic process. 3) Nevada - Radioactive Uranium Dump for the country Best States 1) NY - I've lived on a Long Island Beach. I've lived in Adirondack Park. I've lived in Manhattan. I live in Brooklyn. Everything is in this state. 2) Vermont - The last remanants of small town America and green natural beauty. 3) Oregon - Desert, Coastline, Mountains - I love it. |
I am a Texan, not a New Yorker. Here's my listings.
Worse Oklahoma-They always beat us in the Red River Shootout, OU. Also, Oklahoma should be annexed by Texas. Wisconsin-Hotbed for radical leftist politics. Louisiana-Our neighbors to the east. The rest area is nasty if you even been in them. New Orleans is really dangerous place. Also, its very humid and I am use to to it. Also, its a dirty place. Best Texas-My home state. Great place to live. Lot of transplants in Texas. We are not all rednecks, but there are few of them and they live in East Texas mainly. New York-New York City is there and my all time favorite city. I hear Upstate New York is cool. Tough decision between Arizona and New Mexico, because they have really dark skies and a good place to star watch with a telescope. |

3. Kentucky. Bunch of red neck hicks. My dad was raised in northern Kentucky, suburbs of Cincinnati :P Though that part of the state is definitely more Yankee than Rebel, considering that Cincy in its prime styled itself as Mini-New York  |
While I agree that Utah is by far the most beautiful place in the US (Moab is amazing), it lacks a lot in my opinion. All I know is my experience there and I was very unimpressed. Are you aware that for the Olympics, Utah decided to give all their homeless bus tickets to Seattle? Low.

My Top three favorites are:
1. New Jersey 2. New York 3. California My top 3 worst: 1. Texas 2. Georgia 3. Florida |
It is hard to say best and worst states, considering that there is so much they have to offer in either vein, but whatever.
I do not consider NJ to be the worst by far, but it's refineries and chemical plants in central NJ are some of teh worst I have seen. MOST of the midwestern states are BORING AS HELL! if you did not have a sign telling you that you just left Oaklahoma you would not know you crossed into Texas for a good 300 miles or so. Nevada is all Cows and Corn, and New Mexico has one friggin corner of Mesas and Colored Rocks and that is about it. Arizona sux rox as well. Litterally!!! I guess the places I liked the best were the ones that were there because of their diversity. Not saying that they ARE the best, as I have not lived in all sections, but areas like Cali (NoCal!!!!), Massachusetts (Bahston), and New York (The city, not in East Bumblepluck) are some of the best. I have also liked areas of the East and West coastlines, and some of the spots in Colorado, Utah and the like are nice as well. The gulf area is a sweat-hole that I would not want to live in at all, and areas like ND and Montana may have some excellent areas (like skiing in Montana) but they are COLD FLAT AREAS (for the most part). So whatever. |

NEBRASKA. Durnit! Nevada is just another boring state shadowed by the Rockies and dry as a bone because of it. My bad. |
New Jersey - Because it's just plain evil No wonder the Jersey Devils have won the Stanely cup so many times!
(IMO) Out of the Fifty States the last three places I would like to live would be.. 1.) Arkansas 2.) North Dakota (too cold, too boring, too flat) 3.) Alaska (Im sure Summers there are great, but I hate Winters spent indoors) Out of the fifty States the three that I have never lived but would like to would be.. 1.) California (Santa Monica, Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, Newport Beach, San Clemente, Malibu, Monetery, Carmel, San Francisco, Pacifica, Santa Cruz, La Jolla) California has an excellent quality of life, lots of recreational activities to keep busy all year round. 2.) Washington (Seattle, West Seattle), excellent quality of life. Great place to raise a family. 3.) Tie between Colorado and Oregon |
Newbie here. Love this forum!
Favorites: 1. New Jersey - Look at the demographics/opportunity and location, location, location. Beaches and industry!!! 2. New York - The world's finest city. See things youve never seen before! 3. Florida - Weather, beaches and thongs. Least Favorite: 1. Mississippi - The textbook example of where NOT to live. They are just entering the 19th century there. 2. Texas - A state so impressed with itself that they think they are a nation....and they gave us all GW Bush. Enough said. 3. Georgia - Without Atlanta, GA = MISSSISSIPPI Disclaimer: Lifelong Southerner, currently live in Atlanta (hate it), raised in Alabama, lived in MS for a (very short) time. Always a New York City fanatic, I have wised up and am trying to relocate to Jersey (can't afford NYC!!). so when I say MS sucks, believe it! |
I like you Remember, Im from the south too (In NYC now), and I hate it down there.
|
Ive been reading your posts on your journey to NYC Yankee. Hope all is going well for you there.
Unlike your situation, I have wife and kid so Jersey looks like my future home, with the playground of NYC to always go to!!!! Good thing my wife has submitted for a job in Parsippany!! |
I would think that the worst states would be those that have no interesting cities, very few natural attractions and unimpressive economy.
I have not been to any of those but would guess that the worst states are: 1) Mississippi (the poorest state, bad economy, little to see except swamps and casinos) 2) Kansas - flat, agricultural, not much to see or do 3) Nebraska - same as Kansas Some peolpe said that Utah is one of the worst states - can't be. It's beautiful, wealthy, organized and civilized and Salt Lake City is a nice town with great ski resorts. Tennessee has Memphis, so for that reason alone it's better than Nebraska. Texas is certainly not one of the worst states. It has a vibrant economy (Austin is a technological hub with a great university), great highways, many beautiful parks and cities, the best airport I've ever seen anywhere (Dallas Fort Worth) and no state income tax and most people, especially in large cities are nice and friendly. Georgia is probably pretty bad outside of Atlanta and sea towns, but those peaches are tasty. Someone said that Florida is one of the worst states - cannot disagree more. It has anything and everything a good state can think of - booming economy, beautiful beaches, good weather, low taxes and the natural beauty. |
I'm not a very hateful person, but I have to say that I would have trouble enjoying Kansas with their "Intelligent" design, um, situation, and South Dakota and their abortion, um, situation. If the personal is the political, then the politics of my home state fit my person.
