Traffic city driving, straight wide roads, means the majority of consumer vehicles in US are auto. I have personally owned a automatic bmw 850 and tbh it was perfectly suited to that car because of its GT nature, big fast A to B vehicle. But a smaller more highly strung fun car like a forester should be manual imo. But i guess it is what it is. |

When I think forester, I think "soccer mom" or close to. The reason? Because that is who I see driving them. They are just a slightly cooler "minivan" in most cases for most of US. And women here hate effort... I mean standards. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uv2Q0F4BYSA And how relatively cheaply it can be done. |

I could also understand if the vehicle was fast. The Forester really isn't that fast. It is a 6second vehicle with only 225hp. Pretty much all the V6 mid-sized sedans are as fast or faster these days.
It is there for people who don't want to hit 60 in 8 seconds or more. Get a little more kick. Even old people want some kick. Even Buick offered supercharged models back in the 90's and early 2000s. |

Blasphemy, you come to PA where we have hills and turns and enjoy your pathetic automatic transmission struggling to find the right gear. |

Well, that depends on the auto. I like Subaru autos, with my old Legacy I loved the auto, 4:11 final drive in that car, LSD, and a much better F/R ratio for regular driving. I live in PA too, and while I love driving a manual an auto is nice around here. I'm just bummed that Subaru has kinda turned to **** recently. I don't know, I just have more fun with a manual myself. I miss the 4.11's though, my Legacy has 3.97 final drive, also with a LSD, and while I am impressed with the velocity it will hit, I'd give it up for that snappiness back. I'd ditch my transmission but I was told it's "special", something has been done to it. Not sure what. |

Where we do go does get snow. Hitting the trails is always fun. Tons of trails around here. More cargo room is better for a family. Easier to get in and out as well as the kid. Being able to tow is a plus.
Gas really isn't much of a concern. So long as it isn't my DD. Buick gets 30mpg for my commute and road trips. Small cars are totally out of the question. Way to tiny, generally really slow and just not much on an n/a 4 banger fan. I've looked at some Regal GS and test drove one but no luck. |

Driving a manual is useless except in very few situations. Europeans need to stop justifying how awesome it is and realize it is a big waste of time. As a general rule, those interested in driving use a manual, those who just regard it as a task to be made as simple as possible use automatics. |

I suggest you learn to use the clutch when changing gear, you'll find it makes a great deal of difference to the driving experience. I enjoy driving a manual, but having driven a few newer auto's you can be sure this will be my transmission of choice in the future. What differences does the clutch make these days do you think? In the real world I mean, not on a track. EDIT: In the US, buying a manual is mainly just making unnecessary work for yourself. Do you often do that? --- Post Update --- Surely the minority should be automatics ? There cant be that many fools that bought these new as autos as opposed to manuals can there ?! |
