Fuel panic-buying in the UK
 

Might (or might not) be a tanker driver strike for a few days in a few weeks, so, naturally, it's sensible to act like petrol's never going to available again right now.

If I run out I'll just work at home for a few days. The world is not going to end. I'd love to blame the current government, but they are lumbered with a mountain of debt from the wasteful labour years to clear. If you want someone to blame, start with the morons that went on without a care in the world what they were spending. Yes, I know that isn't anywhere near the full in's and out's of it, but even if I wanted a political discussion it isn't allowed.

I found it funny all the people queuing a mile down the road for fuel and not one of them was "panic buying" when asked. Hahahahaha.

Each of them said they were filling up when they normal do and doing nothing different. Hilarious.

Its very funny that suddenly everyone now owns a petrol lawn mower and that is what all the jerry cans they are filling up is for. Not panic buying at all !

The problem is that if you dont buy now and they do call a strike you'll be ****ed. They are running out of fuel here and there are no real panic buyers just people keeping there tanks topped up just in case.

If these guys go on strike longer than week, everyone is going to be screwed, even those topping off now.

Well I had to queue to fill it up today. Brimmed it from low fuel as I always do. I can make that mast up to two weeks, but hopefully this'll come to nothing anyway. Although some pumps ran dry at my local garage.

The UK rules are for 67.5 days of fuel in reserve, so nobody will be screwed.

That's for the country, not the garages. How do you think it's going to get to the garage with the tanker's on strike? Were you on another planet last time this happened?

Whats wrong with filling up your tank and several canisters if there is a possible respective strike around the corner? I wouldnt call that panic buying.

I wouldnt wanna have to walk to work in case there is a strike. And no, a bycicle isnt an option either as I'm a lazy *******. Its either going by car or call in sick. (and get fired because its obvious you arent sick when everybody knows about the strike lol. But still, being unemployed is still better than cycling to work for even one day!)

Do you want to hear about a real middle-class problem? The petrol stations have stopped selling super unleaded so that they can hold more regular. That means when I do want some petrol, I have to buy regular.

Because once everyone starts doing it that in itself will cause a fuel shortage; not to mention the serious problems caused by longs queues of cars at every garage. Also the maximum amount of petrol you're allowed to store in a domestic garage is 20 litres in two 10 litre metal containers. That's only about a third of an average fuel tank.

It isn't even certain there's actually going to be a strike yet - talks are due to be held with Acas - and even if one is called 7 days notice of it will have to be given.

So those with a second car with more than 10/20 litres of fuel in are breaking the law?
There are basic safety reasons for limiting fuel storage outside of a specially build hazardous containment building, but sometimes the law is an ass.
So, I gather that it's illegal to sell fuel containers with more than a 10l capacity as well? Otherwise they'd be aiding and abetting breaking the law, as would any service station that allowed one to fill more than 2 10l containers.
They don't take it so seriously here, heck, at the mo' I've a 20, a 10, a 5 and 4 litre fuel containers in the garage - only the 4 has any (2 stroke) fuel in it.

Personally, I wouldn't call stocking up on fuel panic buying as it's not a romour or unfounded reason to purchase, but a sensible precaution - or contingency measure - for the expected strike.

Most of the Petrol stations near me have now run out of Petrol. Ridiculous.

I was out last night and at 10.00pm there were massive queues at their Petrol forecourt.

This morning they were closed and out of supply.

They have to give 7 days notice for a strike, so even if they did call one today there will be another week before it starts. People really are stupid. Really, really stupid.

Sigh.... it will get blamed on the government ministers advice as well. While not the best advice, he at least said put them in your garage - not move it between containers in the kitchen when you have the oven on. [wallbash]
