How does a 60+ hour work week look like?

I think KH must have been overly tired if he was bragging about 60 hour weeks. Of course, he may have been being facetious.

60 is a joke. Most people are just unbelievably lazy. For the last half year of my PhD I was working ~110 hours a week.

7) Did you have time to shower?

1) No, 21hrs core - but I'm often doing the extra day's overtime when needed...
2) Of course!
3) 1hr per week
4) 7-8
5) Usually on my way home from work as I have to pass through town - I can be home after doing the shopping within 30 mins of leaving the office
6) Yes, but I don't look after him
7) Loads!

I do hope you eat something in between in those twelve hours. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...ies/scared.gif
At my desk, yes.

freevideoandoicsI 10-10-2010 02:21 AM

Usually around 8-10 hours / day, including weekend... --> ~56-70 hrs / week
as I can do most of the (programming) work @ home time spent for transit isnt too much
(if they appear I label them as worktime however http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...ilies/wink.gif )
as my usual sleep time is ~6 hours a day, there is usually enough time for other things besides working
(unless at crunch times when there might be more hours/day spent with work)

Kimeoffessyr 10-10-2010 02:29 AM

Oh and I'd like to point out that I was working all those hours at an average wage of $9.00/hr

I'd probably LIVE in the office if I was getting an investment banking analyst salary of $40K or so.

It is quite annoying IMO supermarkets are only open until 8 PM here, and half the time all the bread, meat and bananas are already gone by 7 o'clock. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...milies/mad.gif

Inspired by KrazyHorse's bragging thread.

As someone living in the paradisial states of Western Europe, I have trouble imagining this.

Is that a five-day work week, meaning twelve hours per day?
Do you perhaps count your lunchbreaks among those sixty hours??
How many hours do you spend in transport between your workplace and home?
How many hours do you sleep per night?
When do you buy your bread and other stuff? Aren't the shops already closed by the time you get home??
Do you have kids?
Do you have hobbies?
Working hard ain't illegal here, princess.

Kingerix 10-10-2010 08:54 AM

When I worked at a supermarket back in high school, I worked from 12am til 9am in the summer. http://www.discussworldissues.com/im...ons/icon14.gif

If it looks like I'm going to work over 49 hours in a week, my employer is required, by law, to send me home.

That's what always annoys me when I go to Europe: it's like the bloody USSR all over again. I know the shop assistants would also like to work a 40-day week, but how am I supposed to buy anything? Here in Moscow I have two 24x7 supermarkets within walking distance, and you can buy stuff like electric appliances and clothing 12x7, from 10 to 22.

Gvadelunar 10-10-2010 02:29 PM

Some weeks I only work 32 hours http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...lies/smile.gif If you count breaks as working, then I've fairly regularly done simple 60 hour breaks, 0815-2030, 5 days a week.

5 minutes travelling (total)
I eat on the job, because you have to eat with the patients
I generally only need to buy a loaf, some milk, cheese, eggs etc once a week and it lasts, because I eat all of the food at work, which they provide
Around 7 hours of sleep a night. Usually one night a week I sleep less because I end up doing something when I get home.
No kids
A couple of hobbies.

No social life though. Truth be told, I'd rather work 60-72 hour weeks and save the money, than have the time off, but I love my job. And obviously I'm such a sad act I have no other distractions in my life.

In germany this is changing for the better finally...
shops are usually open till 8 PM, often even till 10PM from monday till saturday.
And shops at railway stations are allowed to open on sundays as well,
which is why many large railway stations nowadays resemble small shopping centers,
with suprmarkets and other shops, that are open 7 days a week

$40k as an analyst? I'd spend all day (not that it would take all day) looking for a better paid job.
I've never made more than $13/hour in my life. That's around $26K with 40-hour weeks.

$40K would be more money than I'd know what to do with.

NicolasOL 10-10-2010 05:44 PM

It's all relative. I'm used to living on not even $20K a year.

I have worked that many hours on occasions but it is rare, and I will always take the hours back when times are easier.

It's the great thing about City workers, they earn all that money, but due to their hours their hourly rate is probably about the same as that of a milkman http://www.discussworldissues.com/im...ons/icon14.gif
No.
