Default Augusta National - Google Maps Image
http://s1052.photobucket.com/albums/...nt=Augusta.jpg

Zooming in really close showed me this... is the course being renovated? Is this a really old picture? What's up with most of the fairway being gone on one hole, and apparently a green or two is missing?

Depending on when the picture was taken, they could have been doing renovations to the course. In fact, I would guess that was taken sometime last year, as the green being worked on is 16, and the club did some work on the greens on 8 and 16 prior to this year's tournament.

Also, the club does not stay open during the summertime, I believe the months it is open is October to May.

Probably an old picture. As Ary said, the club is only open about half of the year.

It's such a private and exclusive club that how busy it is is irrelevant. They have all the money they need.

And it's not so much the prime season in the summer in the south here.

Plus when its so hot they don't want the course getting torn up and dried out. They can work on the course uninterrupted all summer without golfers there.

It is my understanding they close it for maintenance every summer. Most golf courses in the south do the majority of their maintenance in the summer months. It is my understanding they choose to close the course to perform their maintenance uninterrupted. They also say that it protects the course from damage caused by normal play in the hot summer months to help with maintaining perfect conditions for the months they are open for play.

I also believe that Augusta National is different than most of the courses in the area in that it is almost if not all Bent grass which is not as heat resistant as Bermuda. They also do not use Bermuda because depending on the spring weather, Bermuda may not be fully green in time for the Masters. As others have said, the course closes every summer and that is the time they do any major work to the course.
