The current golf handicap system that’s used in Britain & Ireland is known as the CONGU Unified Handicapping System. It’s published by the Council of National Golf Unions (CONGU). Fortunately for those in the UK/Ireland and some other parts of the world, the way in which the handicap is calculated is a lot less complicated than the one the USGA has in place. But without getting in to too much detail about the ins and outs of it all, the CONGU can give an unfair advantage to the lower handicapped player.
If you want to read all about the USGA vs CONGU Handicapping System then I recommend reading the British Vs USGA Handicaps article from Pope of Slope. The CONGU system allows a player to take strokes off certain holes from their round. This system allows you a maximum of double bogey on each hole. So if you were to score a 10 on a par 5 you can score that hole as a 7 and not a 10. Doing this for each hole gives you your total net score for that round. FOR EXAMPLE: A golfer submits a scorecard with 4 birdies and 6 pars 4 bogeys and 4(5 over par holes ) on a course where the course handicap is 72 he would shoot 20 over par so 92-72 would give an handicap of 20 whereas with the two shot maximum on each hole he would shoot 80-72 that would give and handicap of 8 well thats how i understand it ![]() |

CONGU (I'm in Ireland):
You are cut based on your score versus standard scratch. Not entirely sure how this is calculated but it relates to how easy/hard the course plays on that day. Eg par at my course is 69, CSS (comp standard scratch) is usually 68, sometimes 67. I'm cut based on my score versus this 68 or 67. A reasonable number of good scores by high handicappers will push down standard scratch A guy in the club last year was scratch. He'd to shoot 3 under to be cut 0.1 on certain days. Other days shooting level par saw him raised 0.1. |
