Default What is a good putting average
Out of the scores I kept this year I only kept track of my putting maybe 5 times and ended up with a 1.75 and to me I believe that is alittle high. But for fellow THPers and ameaturs what's a decent to good one? Obviously we all can't be automatic 1 putters

I would say that heavily depends on GIR numbers. If you don't hit many, then you have an opportunity to stick it close for a one putt. If you hit a lot, I would be happy with an average near 2 all day.

I think this is a misleading stat. I have had 20-something putts in a round and shot 110.

Try to measure putts per GIR. If you can hit anything under 1.5, you would be a putting stud. I would say that 1.75 would be very respectable if measuring putts per GIR.

i just checked my stats i was 1.82 this year and 1.96 per GIR. something id def like to lower next year. it has gotten better than from the beginning of the year though so at least i am improving.

Okay cause what I use(oobgolf) you have to put in the putts and it gives the GIR percentage so I guess my "per GIR" was 1.75

I am 1.97 per hole and 2.19 per GIR. Whats killing me is my actual GIR, I am only 26.1% I am pretty close to 32 putts per round and would love to be at 30 or under. That will not happen unless I hit more greens. I will say that your 1.75 is good, you must be hitting a lot more greens.

I would double check and verify, but if so that is pretty darn good. I mean a GIR 1 putt is a birdie so basically at 1.75 you are birdieing 1 of 4 GIR's (assuming zero 3 putts).

Even putts per GIR hit isn't such a great stat alone.

This example is overly exaggerated...

If you hit every GIR to 10ft or closer and came out with 36 putts for the round, that is terribly bad.
If you hit every GIR to 60ft+ and came out with 36 putts for the round, that is outrageously good.

Look at your first putt distances when hitting GIRs, and then go from there.

While that is true, when looking at long term averages it is a very telling stat. Basically says how many scoring opportunities you are able to convert.

I agree. I think next season I am going to mark down the length of all my putts each round- miss or make. I'm also going to record the outcome (miss or make, if it's the first putt I'll say if it was a 1, 2, or 3 putt). That way I can split it into categories like short (0-6 ft), mid-range (6-15 ft), and long (15+ ft) and see my make % for each. That way I can see what I need to work on most.

You guys tell me, I've only kept track 4 times all year, so I'm just trying to figure it out if it's good or not.

It goes : Avg. Putts-Fairway%-GIR%-Score
The average putts comes to 1.75

A better stat for me is total distance of putts made. That is a better indication of putting ability for me.

You are very close to where I am at....I am 2.21 per GIR...just need to hit more GIR....too many 10 feet off the green in regulation chip up and putt for par but make bogey.....that's why I have really been working the short game.

I agree. If you miss greens and chip close you could have a lot of one putts. Or you could miss greens and suck at chipping and have a lot of 30 footers for your first putt. You aren't going to make may of those.

Only you can tell how you are putting for sure by those stats. How much are you missing by? Are you missing high or low (if you are missing low, you are not ever giving yourself a chance to make it). Are you putting your long putts close enough to where you aren't nervous about making the second putt? Do you have any chip ins? If so, that's going to skew your putting averages. You could chip in nine times in a round, but three putt every other green. That's 27 putts for the round, but I'd say that's not good putting. There's too many variables.

A better stat for me is total distance of putts made. That is a better indication of putting ability for me.
That's probably the best way. But I still think you are putting good if you make the short ones and leave your longer first one close enough that you don't three putt.

I agree. But it also depend on what you consider a "long" putt. 2 putting from 20 is acceptable. Consistently 2 putting from 6 feet is a problem.

Not just a problem, my problem. My total distance of putts made is likely horrendous if I measured it. It would probably be around 50 feet.

1.75 putts per gir would put you in the top 30 on the european tour this year. Last year it would have been top 15. The pga has eleventy billion putting stats, but that doesn't seem to be one of them.
