What makes you..
Lay up or go for it?
Is it the weather first? The type of round? (good or bad) Just always go for it Or is is the distance? Personally its weather first, then the type of round I'm having, then I look at the distance last. I love the feeling of being around the green in two or even on. |

Distance has to be considered first for me....then everything else follows.

Yardage and trouble. If its over 210 yards then I will lay up every time, and if there is trouble in certain areas, then I might play away from it. But generally if I have 200 or less I go for it.

Yardage, and lie for me. If less than 200 and level lie, then I generally go for it. Over 200, or if the ball is above or below my feet then I loose confidence in not putting myself in trouble.

I almost always go for par fives in two, unless a hazard might be a problem.
And I almost never get there. But I rarely lay up to a number. I like to chip and pitch. Kevin |
Depends on the course, but I will usually go for it and take the chance. But if I have a really good round going, I won't go for it and let good course management take over. Weather is usually the last thing I take into account.

Until I can hit a 250-300 yard hybrid I'll be laying up.

My decision is based on howe much trouble is around the green. If I can miss and still get up and down, then its a no brainer.

I would say distance first and then the weather. I play every shot to a number, and going for it has to be a shot I can pull off nine times out of ten.
On long approach shots, if I'm going for it, I'll play to a distance to the back of the green most of the time. To hit a long shot to a front distance or even a middle of the green distance, means you have to hit a perfect shot everytime. Unless you are a tour player, you simply are not going to hit every shot perfectly, so I go with a distance for a less than perfect shot. |
"I didn't show to lay up" used to be a mantra. I have matured some over the last 15 years though. Distance is first. If I can get there with a 3-iron, it's on. If I need anything more, I will focus on potential trouble. No need to scramble for a bogie (or worse) due to stupidity.

Its just a general feeling based upon a lot of different factors: weather, distance, lie and how well Im swinging the club that day. If I dont believe beyond a shadow of a doubt that I can pull off the shot, I will lay up.

Distance, plain and simple. Why go for something when you know deep down its a luck shot. Course management 101....
|
Trouble then distance. Good example is my home course #1 par 5 hole. Second shot with a 3w generally gets me in trouble with the very tight conditions or in great shape but 45 to 60 yards out with a tough green to pitch to. Rather have a full 100 yard shot every time, along with safe.
