I currently play 4 wedges: the PW that came with the set plus a 52, 56, and a 60. I use the 60 (with less bounce) around the green, the 56 (with more bounce) from the sand, the 52 mostly for pitching outside of 50 yards and the PW is really just another iron.
To keep to the 14 club limit I took out my 4 iron which puts me between clubs on many par 3's and I end up choking down and/or fading shots with my 3h to get to those 190-200 yard pins (and don't hit many of those greens as a result). I am thinking of ditching my 52 and using my PW and 56 to fill in that gap so I have better gaps in the long clubs. Does this make sense or am I better off keeping my scoring oriented set. What do you play? |

Here is a really good (and huge) thread on wedge setup.

Great Topic: For me it's also all about gapping and you need to analyze your game and how often you come up and say, jeez I wish I had that 4i -VS- how many times you've used the 52* in a round.
I have always heard and believe that the scoring clubs are those hit from within 150 yds or so. I personally take my chances with being in-between clubs from 180-210 out, I take the extra club and swing easy. First, my expectations are bit lower, with a hope to get on the green while eliminating landing in that area that is DEAD; but when I an 90-125 yds out, my expectations are high and want/need to be more accurate. I'd rather have a full or almost full swing from that distance than -VS- having to muscle a shot or take a 3/4 swing which at our skill level is more difficult. |

Could not agree more DC! Being a liitle in between on the second shot of a par 5 or on long par 3's is acceptable in my game but I could not stand being in between inside of 100 yards. My 56* sand wedge saved me at least 3 shots last week with some solid shots inside 50 yards, I can never remember being able to say that about a long iron or my 5-wood. |

For me, I just personally like having more options when within 100yds. The club I use depends on the lie, the stance, the slope, the wind, hole placement, green firmness and obsticles. A 50yd shot may be hit with a 3/4 60*, a 52* pitch or a 8i chip, but it all depends on those circumstances. Hitting a 90% 4H is just much easier for me when I know I have 20-45yd buffer (front to back) from 190yds out. Again, just my game.
