Default Pondering Changes to my Bag
I currently play 4 wedges: the PW that came with the set plus a 52, 56, and a 60. I use the 60 (with less bounce) around the green, the 56 (with more bounce) from the sand, the 52 mostly for pitching outside of 50 yards and the PW is really just another iron.

To keep to the 14 club limit I took out my 4 iron which puts me between clubs on many par 3's and I end up choking down and/or fading shots with my 3h to get to those 190-200 yard pins (and don't hit many of those greens as a result).

I am thinking of ditching my 52 and using my PW and 56 to fill in that gap so I have better gaps in the long clubs.

Does this make sense or am I better off keeping my scoring oriented set.

What do you play?

How often do you hit your 5-wood? could you take the 5 -wood out. Maybe take out both the 3&5 and add a 4-wood.

It's all about the lofts and gaps for me.

What loft is your current PW? What kind of gaps are you filling with your wedge setup currently?

I'm in a similar situation, although I have a 53°, 56°, and 60°. I could live without the 56°. I'm thinking a change to just 54° and 60° would cover my bases, then I open up room for maybe a 2 hybrid or something like that.

do you see a huge difference in distance for your 5W and your 3H? If not, I would ditch the 5W

PW is 110-120, 52* is 95 - 105 on a full swing but I almost never take full swings with the 56* or 60* because I am pretty good at using feel and flighting my wedges to controll distance. I am thinking I can adapt that style to fewer short clubs but it is harder to do with the long clubs and maintain accuracy.

Great Topic: For me it's also all about gapping and you need to analyze your game and how often you come up and say, jeez I wish I had that 4i -VS- how many times you've used the 52* in a round.

I have always heard and believe that the scoring clubs are those hit from within 150 yds or so.
I personally take my chances with being in-between clubs from 180-210 out, I take the extra club and swing easy. First, my expectations are bit lower, with a hope to get on the green while eliminating landing in that area that is DEAD; but when I an 90-125 yds out, my expectations are high and want/need to be more accurate. I'd rather have a full or almost full swing from that distance than -VS- having to muscle a shot or take a 3/4 swing which at our skill level is more difficult.

I really love my R9 3W and 5W. What I probably need to do is get a Hybrid I trust. I have the older version of the TM Rescue and it has so much draw bias I can't controll it very well.

Thanks for the link. I have been pondering this as well. I am just not comfortable with the 60 that I carry sometimes, so a change needs to be made.

Could not agree more DC! Being a liitle in between on the second shot of a par 5 or on long par 3's is acceptable in my game but I could not stand being in between inside of 100 yards. My 56* sand wedge saved me at least 3 shots last week with some solid shots inside 50 yards, I can never remember being able to say that about a long iron or my 5-wood.

But none of those shots inside 50 yards were full swings, they were all feel shots. I use my 52* for most of those but I bet I can learn to use my PW or 56* just as well. I dont play any full swings inside 90 yards.

For me, I just personally like having more options when within 100yds. The club I use depends on the lie, the stance, the slope, the wind, hole placement, green firmness and obsticles. A 50yd shot may be hit with a 3/4 60*, a 52* pitch or a 8i chip, but it all depends on those circumstances. Hitting a 90% 4H is just much easier for me when I know I have 20-45yd buffer (front to back) from 190yds out. Again, just my game.

I share the same opinion. I would rather have the club I "need" when I am closer to the hole rather than having the option of using a 5w if I have a good lie over my 3h. Thats me though.... I would say that I use my 60* wedge the least but I definitely "need" it a couple times a round.

Does your 5W kinda overlap with your 3H? I don't carry a 5W because my 19* 3H works fine as my 200-215 yard club, just a bit shorter than my 3W. The next club down is a 24* 5H, which supposedly overlaps with my 5i but I actually hit it about a club longer to 185-195 yards, so I don't really have a gap issue. I also have the PW + 3 wedges and like others said I'd always prefer having more options from 100 yards and in.
