53 y/o and in the process of doing a major committement to fitness both in general and for golf and have several golf fitness books, tapes, club with weights at the end, etc; and have had a session with a golf specific fitness trainer. So far in a month or so of serious fitness training 5-6 times a week - have added 3-5 MPH on the SS. SS currently in the 98-103 range (depending on the monitor and/or the driver and shaft used) with a 5 iron speed usually around 78-83. I am working to try to get back to what it was 2-3 years ago before both a huge drop off in fitness and a rotator cuff injury affected it (as well as age) with about at least a 5-7% drop off.
Have seen advertisements for the Medicus and other trainers that track swing speed by being attached to a club and/or a portable detection device. I wonder if they are worth it from anyone's experience? |

Also working on some swing mechanics fully agree but the more fit (combination of > flexibility - most important at my age, core strength and to a lessor degree forearm and wrist strength) I feel the better i can be and not lose as much "with time". Fitness as well as swing mechanics combine in my experience for me being able to play with a compact and "stronger" swing with less effort and avoid the dreaded "blocks" IMO all things being equal. I do recognize SS does not equal the smash factor and many other factors can affect distance but when I was fit I was at least a club longer all things being equal.

While on the bench for about 6 weeks I spent quite a bit of time with a TPI certified fitness instructor. I didn't measure my SS, but my driver distance increased by 15 yards and my whole round consistency was noticeably improved.
From what I've read fast twitch muscle exercises like the speed chain are an effective training aid to increase SS. I plan to try one in a month or so. |
