I can work my Driver left or right, pretty much on command. I'm not sure each time how much left or right, but it's a fairly reliable club for me.
My irons however, lately I'm just happy if I get the ball off the ground and in the fairway. To answer the question, I think it's better to go for a consistent shot shape and get that dialed in. Then once you get your fast ball consistent, you can work on your change up. |

I think as long as your natural shot is not an extreme hook or slice, but rather a controlled fade or draw, you should stick with it.
It is nice, however to be able to get out of trouble by intentionally hooking or slicing the ball. I have a natural draw, but can accomplish an extreme hook or slice without messing up my full swing, by exaggerating those components that cause a hook or slice, and punching the ball with a mid iron. For example I can weaken my grip and open my stance for a slice, and vice-versa strengthen my grip and close my stance for an extreme hook. I wouldn't mind changing my draw into a nice, high, baby fade, however after 50 years of playing golf, I'm leaving well enough alone. |

Just adding to what I said earlier though, I do think it's important to trend towards one direction at the very least though. I know some people who tell me their natural shot is straight. And well...to a degree it's true, playing with them I realized they don't think about shaping their shots and while "most" of their shots are straight, their misses can be misses in BOTH directions due to timing.
With that, you're basically forced to aim down the center of the fairway rather than cheat towards one side and it makes it harder. In fact, they're usually pretty nervous when we play the more narrow tree-lined tracks. I mean it's much easier setting up in the left side of the teebox and hit a draw that starts on the right side of the fairway as it gives you the whole fairway to work with rather than half. |
