Like others have said, it helps to keep things moving. I sometimes will do the double par if I am having a really bad day and just want the frustration to end. But I haven't really had one of those days in a long time, nor many holes that are double par. My problem isn't the blow up holes, its consistently being 1 or 2 shots over par for the majority of a round that leads to my higher scores.

I use a combination of the two methods. Usually if I score a double par and do not get the ball in the cup I will mark the hole showing that I did not finish. To me this helps when I compare scorecards later on and see how many holes I was over that amount. My goal hopefully soon is to finish out every hole under double par. I am not to worried about score at this stage of as I am with consistancy and getting to double bogey and under on every hole. On a side note I do hate when a group is in front of me and just hacking away at a ball or taking 4,5,6 etc putts on the green. I know my skill level and if I cannot sink a putt in 2 or 3 I know my putting game needs some work.

well it takes you 6 shots to get on the green on a par 3, so whats the difference haha

Interesting topic as I was pondering this all last year (my first year). As most have mentioned, if you are slowing down others, that should be a big factor. My take on it was that it was best for ME to pick it up at double par. Primarily due to the fact that while I was striving to improve my game, enjoying myself was equally as important. Well, I see no fun in hacking it out of one bunker into another, then back into the first bunker, and so on. Once the frustration set in on a hole, I wasn't learning/improving anyway. Whatever part of my game was adding up to the most strokes, I would then work on that at the range/putting green.
I am now keeping score accurately and double par is MUCH less of an issue.

Im sure this was mentioned somewhere in the thread but rules like the double par rule are good for 2 simple reasons. (1) For handicap purposes & (2) Pace of play
