I would love to play a local tour here in Iowa. Years ago, there used to be a Southern Iowa Golfers Association that would go all over southern iowa and play small town courses. I don't even think that exists anymore.
Golf Channel Am Tour is here in Iowa, but I'm sort of annoyed at having to pay what amounts to $800-$1000 to play I think 5 one day tournaments and 1 two day tournament. It's several hundred dollars cheaper to just pay green fees at these courses. Our Iowa PGA section has golf tours for kids, juniors, up to college aged, but nothing for grownups. I could go around and just play in random tournaments, but what I'm really looking for is an actual tour format. A tour that has events 2-4 times per month, where I can compete in a FedEx points style throughout the season. So I ask, who else would love to play on a local summer tour, but one does not exist, or the one(s) that do exist are cost prohibitive? Has anyone ever tried to organize one? If so, how did you make it work? |

These things need to make money in order to stay afloat. You are going to have to pay more because these events need promotion, prizes, etc. 175$ per event is not out of line for tournament atmosphere play. But in the case of the GC Am tour, I think there were 17 total members last year. Not exactly high numbers of people. If there were 30 people or more, I could justify the price. Just my opinion I guess. Oddly enough, after posting this thread, I found out that our Iowa Golf Association (amateur version of Iowa PGA) puts on an amateur tour for basically slightly higher than the normal green fees at each of the golf courses. Too bad I don't have 10 rounds posted in the past 12 months at a 'member' course to have a GHIN. It's only four events, but I guess it's better than nothing. I still think they could put on more events though. |

Just get a bunch of people together and put on your own little tournament. Unless you are a scratch golfer, what pleasure do you get from beating other bogey golfers with a net score? I messed around a couple years ago in our local tournaments, but not really for score, just to get out and meet other golfers in the area. After I joined my local course mens club, I stopped competing(used lightly) in the other tournaments.

Wait til June 11-12 Since I joined a golf club Im going to try my hand at a memorial day tourney, its teams of 2 then a blind draw for your other 2 teammates. I think its best low net score of each 2-some per hole, except on the long par 3 finishing holes of 9 and 18 when all 4 scores count. My old boss said as day 1 concluded last year, they were in 2nd place, until someone took a dreaded 7 on the 18 in front of everyone and dropped them to 7th. |
