Default Average drives and iron hits to break 100 90 80
I have seen this somewhere before on the internet on a chart, What is the average drive and iron yardage a person must do to golf 100, 90, 80?

I think that's impossible to tell you for sure buddy. There are so many variables other than just distance someone hits it that it would have to factor in.

While there might be a nice 'rule of thumb' for distances, it certainly isn't law. I've known plenty of people who hit the ball a ton that can barely break 100, and plenty of people who can barely hit it out of their shadow who shoot under 80. Most of the time it is about consitency and short game. There isn't a magical 7-iron distance where you break 90, 80, etc.

There might be a survey that was done and it was concluded that the average for players who shoot score X, hit the driver Y distance, but there isn't any particular number that you need to strive for in order to shoot good scores.

I vaguely remember an article about this, but can't really nail it down.

yeah, there was one in GD a month or two ago, it's all semantics, it doesn't matter a heckuva lot how far you hit it. Example, I quit hitting driver the past few weeks and have shot my best rounds ever. Now if the flat stick would behave I might have a shot of getting somewhere around 79

Kind of a strange concept... I can bet there are plenty of people who can't drive it more than 200 who can easily break 90, and subsequently, I know guys who can bomb them over 300 who can't break 90 if their life depended on it..

Hopefully someone finds the list. I am very interested to see it!

You hit the nail ont he head. Otherwise wouldnt the longest hitters on the PGA Tour win every single week? And the longest hitter on the PGA Tour I dont believe has ever even won.

Now that I think about it, Erica's grandpa is lucky to hit a driver 200 yards, but he can and does break 80.

The following links are not a direct answer, but I thought of them when I read your question.

You talking about Quiros? Cause I think Watson supplanted him in distance.

they should make a study on the straightest ball strikers not the longest...

there's an old guy thats a member at our course who can barely walk but he shoots in the 70's from the same tees i play... i out drive him every single time... but he hits the ball so straight its ridiculous... fw's and greens all day... it also doesnt hurt that he can sink a putt from anywhere

Maybe he should back off a little. Do you think the "leakage" issue he had in the tournament he almost won was the result of swinging so hard the back door peaked opened up a couple times?

I don't think distance will ever be a req. to shoot a certain score. There are different tee boxes that allow any good player, regardless of distance, to shoot low.

There's also an article in the October 2010 issue of Golf Magazine, page 116, that also suggests more shots are wasted on your long game than in your short game.

But I gotta agree with most here...you can drive a ball into the next ZIP code, but if you can't get it to drop into a little 4" cup, then what's the point? If that theory were totally true, champions in long-drive competitions would be playing on tour posting record scores.
