OMG how bad can the greens get?!?!?!?!?
I'd really like to hear if anyone else is suffering with some of the worst green conditions I can remember! Granted we are and have been in drought conditions since May, and we had one of the hottest summers on record; but what's the reason for the poor conditions. Lack of rainfall, temperature extremes, or the poor economy?
|
We had a few greens fall apart on my course, but it was because they were by a tree line and there was very little breeze, along with constant watering.
The course just aerated the greens though, and with the great weather in Ohio over the last couple weeks, they are recovering famously. |
my greens are always slow. So this summer didn't change that much.

FL Greens are very green right now... Sometimes a bit too wet, but never bad.
likely the lack of water causing you issues. |

We have plenty of rain and sun, so in south florida, all the grass is green, and growing super fast! |
We are the exact opposite here...we have had record rainfalls and every rain is a deluge at nearly 2"/hour. The greens and fairways are totally destroyed. My Saturday group has had to go to pick up and drop in the fairway because 50% of the time you drive the fairway youre in dirt with no grass.

I'm no greens keeper for sure, but if they just left them a little longer I could learn to deal with it. Luckily the course I'm an association member with has kept their greens up very well. Most of the courses in the Richmond area that advertise themselves as the premier courses are in really bad shape. Fuzzy, spotty, and over run by wire grass, but they still want to charge premium greens fees. Sorry for the rant........

We just went through greens Aeriation. greens were so holy and slow. Not the greatest to putt on.

I am closer to Fredericksburg, and have been seeing the same problem from the drought. The bigger courses have managed fairly well. Cannon Ridge has been kept in pretty good shape. The greens rolled/looked very well recently. I haven't played Mattapani Springs lately, but have heard it is in good condition. Lee's Hill was burnt up pretty bad about a month ago. The greens were decent, but everywhere else was hurting. The Gauntlet was in bad shape as well. I play a lot at Cameron Hills, and I think they will most likely lose part of 2 or 3 greens.
Probably the best greens I have seen this summer belong to Hobb's Hole in Tappahanock. It's a decent drive from Richmond, but the greens have held up remarkably through the drought. For a smaller course they certainly keep it in great condition. |
Hobb's does a great job with their greens, they just punched them last week, as have almost everyone in the area. Shame about the Gauntlet though!

A good friend of mine is a super, he is one of the best in the industry. He has no problem keeping his greens nice. I am sure he works hard at it but I think the fact that he knows what he is doing helps. The Super from the new course Tiger is building actually called him for help a few weeks ago. This guy also has something very BIG to do with the masters, but I am not at liberty to say.

So he can get you on Augusta, right? DO IT! On Topic: Our greens in NE Ohio have been beaten all summer. Periods of soaking rain for weeks on end and 2-3 weeks of unseasonable 95+ days. Poor things don't know how to react right now and there is a HUGE variability on green speed from hole to hole. That is the last thing my awful putting needs is inconsistant speeds. |

North Carolina courses have had a very rough summer. Lots of courses have lost their greens.
|
From what I've read, bent grass and high heat are enemies. Weird thing is that some courses here were completely trashed, but some were still pretty good.
|
Here is an article I read back in August that pretty much sums up the problem in most areas. It has been a very rough year with all of the heat here in NC.

We played at Lake Elizabeth, THE worst course yet, and their green weren't mowed or trimmed at all. It was bad!! Most of it wasn't even green http://www.thehackersparadise.com/fo...es/biggrin.png
