Default BBC NEWS: What We Were Taught Over 1400 Years Ago: How To Use The Toilet | Taiwan
Taiwan minister says men should sit down to urinate

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-19390785

Sitting on the toilet promotes a cleaner environment, the minister says

A Taiwanese minister has caused widespread debate on hygiene by suggesting that men should sit down while urinating instead of standing up.

Stephen Shen, Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) minister, said that sitting on the toilet like women do creates a cleaner environment.

This has generated a lot of online debate, says the BBC's Cindy Sui.

Officials are to ask local governments this week to put up notices in public places advising men to sit.

While many women in social media websites favour the suggestion, a lot of men say it would be hard to stop doing what they are used to, our correspondent in Taipei adds.

But EPA officials insist that it can be done.

"We want to learn from Japan and Sweden," said Yuan Shaw-jing, EPA director general of environmental santitation and toxic substance maintenance.

"In Japan, we heard 30% of the men sit," he added.

Inspectors regularly grade Taiwan's estimated 100,000 public toilets, with most of receiving high marks. But EPA officials say there is room for improvement, as some toilets are still smelly because of urine spatter.

While the agency said that it cannot force men to change their habits, it will ask local governments this week to put notices in public toilets with the suggestion.

As for Mr Shen, the EPA confirmed that he himself practices what he suggests - at home and while using public toilets.

Wa Salam

I have to say it is disconcerting to see that in a supposedly Muslim country like the U.A.E., all one sees (or tries to avoid seeing) are men using urinals and other anti-Islamic toilet practices. One might say that it is not a big deal, but the origins of homosexuality are due to the Westerner's view of group toilet and showering habits.

Not only that but in crtain cases I have seen people telling me Salam and then proceed to use urinals to relieve themselves.

I'm still waiting for someone to come up with a halal closet and toilet option for Muslim houses. From the floor tiles to the location of the toilet, should all be halal.

>> Westerner's view of group toilet and showering habits.

When parents enrol their children to a new school they should speak to someone senior that for a Muslim to shower (naked) with other children (of the same gender) after sports is not allowed. Alternative arrangements should be made. However, this could lead to other children bullying or name calling the Muslim pupil. What have parents on SF done?

It's strange how the BBC article doesn't mention that Muslims sit down as well as Japanese and Swedes?

>> "In Japan, we heard 30% of the men sit," he added.

In Muslim countries, we heard 100% (nearly) of the men sit.

In another 1400 years they will figure out that they should also use water to wash their private parts....

No doubt what is superior, but a reminder not to be too judgmental of others about it.

They do use water but it's... when... they shower whenever that is - maybe the next day or earlier. Although you should read the testimonials on the many bidet websites - the same comment again and again - "I wish I had known about it sooner (earlier in my life)!". In fact there's quite a demand in the States for them right now.
