Teeth Brushing

I heard on TV that you can simply and effectively brush your teeth with water. Can anyone help me on finding info? I keep coming up with nothing on my end. I currently brush with toothpaste. Looking for a healthier cheaper alternative maybe...

First mistake is believing everything you hear on TV.

Well thats why I asked. I didn't say I believed it. I said I heard it. There is a big difference.

Would you clean your dishes with just water?
Would you wash your clothes with just water?
Do you wash a car with just water?
Do surgeons prepare for surgery with just water?

lmao, don't be so sensitive.

Edit: Don't be a bob that's silent.

My dentist told me that for the most part the toothpaste is just to freshen your breath and brushing is more effective if you use a barely wet toothbrush with a minimal amount of toothpaste- more friction, or something like that.

ZesePreodaNed 03-28-2008 06:47 AM

I use way too much toothpaste sometimes i think.

AlekseyZubkov 03-28-2008 06:49 AM

I use a lot more than she said to use, but I try to dab it on the sides of my teeth before I start brushing so I can spread it out. I hate having a mouth full of foam. Yuck!

Its true, my friend explained the ins and outs of this to me because she hates to use toothpaste. Toothpaste is just for flavor fresh reasons only, theres actually enough of something in your tap water to effectivly clean your teeth, Ill see if i can get that info for you.

It was better than some of the posts you make with just "LOL" or something noncontributory in them. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...ilies/wink.gif

Fluoride?

They add it to toothpaste, but you can't absorb it very well in your mouth, so they're banking on people swallowing just enough of it to matter.

Heres two different sites to check out:

Fluoride: Nature's Cavity Fighter

WikiAnswers - Is brushing your teeth without toothpaste as effective as with toothpaste

Jeez, I always figured it at least helped LOL

I've brushed my teeth without toothpste, just for maintenance, and it just doesn't seem as clean. I'm not using baking soda- that shit's gross.

It acts indirectly by being absorbed into your blood when you drink fluoridated water and then being incorporated into the structure of developing permanent teeth. And it acts directly on the tooth surface, becoming incorporated into the structure. Once your permanent teeth are developed, internal consumption is pointless. It acts on the tooth surface in adults. Mouth absorption was never a mechanism of action for the use of fluoride. And toothpaste manufacturers all state to use a small amount and avoid swallowing it.

WebMD is a crock of shit. They don't even say the health hazards other than of that in children.

proslaviy 03-28-2008 07:02 AM

eh I tried, why dont you just ask your dentist or something? you do have one of those there right?

I'm just repeating what my nutrition teacher said, but I like your explanation better. It makes more sense to me. And I never could figure out why she said they wanted you to swallow it because of the warning on it...
