We have a dachshund and for a small dog, she has a lot of energy. It takes approximately 45 minutes to walk her on each outing that we do and it's a mile round trip the route we do in the neighborhood. She does this one once a day or every other day. The second walk lasts about 30 minutes and we don't go beyond the apartments.

It's going to depend on you, what breed AND the age because their energy levels are always changing. This is due to the metabolism, which can be increased with regular exercise and play time.

We live on three acres and we have a huge fenced yard but when we do take them walking well...we have two dachshunds that we take to the nearby lake. They are really short legged so it doesn't take much to wear them out. Our other two dogs one is a beagle the other is a mix of some sort but they are larger we take them hiking at the nearby wildlife refuge and they would go all day long if we would.
