The Reverse Sneeze

LOL...So my girlfriend was taking care of my staffie while I was sick (walking her, taking her for a car ride, ect) and came in panicked that Athena "had a hairball" she couldnt cough up (what do you expect from a cat person? lol)....

For those of you who dont know, this is called "a reverse sneeze"...They are very easy to fix...simply place you hand over the dogs nose for a second and the dog will stop "sneezing"

never heard of that!

JAMES PIETERSE 06-26-2012 06:59 PM

I wouldn't put my hand over their nose. The dog will get out of it itself without any assistance. If I just call my dog's name, he'll stop and look at me and stop doing it. But I definitely wouldn't be covering his nose since that's how he breathing.

It's covering their nose for all of 2 seconds..maybe 1. Two of our's do this and that's all it takes.

harmless - have had 2 dogs with it-i will sop on its own

That may be but IMO its completely unnecessary to even get involved.

I have never heard of it, UNTIL this puppy did it.

It scared the heck out of me until I read more about it.

meencegic 06-26-2012 09:11 PM

I've heard of this but have never had a dog do it before.

PareKeect 06-26-2012 09:39 PM

My dog did it the first night we got her, in the middle of the night!

My sister said to push on their nose (like you would do to your own to avoid a sneeze) but I never did. She's fine.

You can look it up on you tube to get some comparisons (and there goes your day! http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/wink.png )

My Boston terrier does it ALL the time... I don't do anything about it. Another Boston terrier I used to know would get frantic and rub the dog's throat http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/confused.png I told him it was pointless, but eh.. it made the guy feel better to think he was helping, so whatever LOL

Unless you're in the show ring when they do it LOL. Sako does it sometimes and the hand over the nose for a second does work http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/wink.png

occalmnab 06-27-2012 03:26 AM

I've seen all my present dogs do it one time or another. It sounds life-threatening but it is completely harmless.

The Boston Terrier would rub another dog's throat? That's a neat trick that I'd love to see. http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/wink.png

.....dogs can breathe through their mouths (hence the pant). Covering the nostrils and allowing air through the mouth stops the incorrect breath cycle demonstrated by reverse sneezing.

propolo 06-28-2012 08:02 AM

lil lola does it

CoiI8XIj 06-28-2012 08:26 AM

lol my weenie dog does this when her nose is itchy, its just their way of scratching the itch
