Default Disqualified: Bulldog and Pekingese Fail Crufts Vet Checks
Source
No dog representing the Pekingese and Bulldog were allowed to compete in Thursday evening’s Best in Group competitions at Crufts after they failed the new veterinary checks that have been introduced to the show.

The Best of Breed award was not given to Pekingese, Palacegarden Bianca, or Bulldog, Mellowmood One In A Million, following their veterinary checks, which were carried out by an independent veterinary surgeon. This means that the dogs will not be allowed to continue into the Toy or Utility Best in Group competitions respectively.

The Kennel Club has introduced veterinary checks for the Best of Breed winners at all Kennel Club licensed General and Group Championship Dog Shows from Crufts 2012 onwards, in 15 designated high profile breeds. This measure was introduced to ensure that Best of Breed awards are not given to any dogs that show visible signs of problems due to conditions that affect their health or welfare.

The fifteen high profile breeds are as follows: Basset Hound, Bloodhound, Bulldog, Chow Chow, Clumber Spaniel, Dogue De Bordeaux, German Shepherd Dog, Mastiff, Neapolitan Mastiff, Pekingese, Shar Pei, St Bernard, French Bulldog, Pug and Chinese Crested.

Caroline Kisko, Kennel Club Secretary, said: “We are determined to ensure that the show ring is a positive force for change and that we help to move breeds forward by only rewarding the healthiest examples of a breed.

“The veterinary checks were introduced to ensure that dogs with exaggerated features do not win prizes. The independent veterinary surgeon decided that the Pekingese and Bulldog should not pass their checks and therefore they did not receive their Best of Breed awards and will not be representing their breeds in the remainder of the competition.”

Haha this is amazing I want to shove this in every EB breeders face.
I still wish the breed would just die off but at least it's a step in the right direction

I would like to see them replaced with more OEB bodied dogs. I still am not a fan because I prefer dogs with more working ability than an OEB can provide but I understand not everyone wants a working dog... They should at least be healthy though, and OEBs have a healthier stature.

I agree, I would pay to own one of these bulldogs. I think this is how they should look like

That is one sexy bulldogge!

A friend of mine on Facebook posted this article... and someone went on about wanting to know what about the dogs didn't pass a health check.

...

Seriously?

Bulldog and Pekingese

That's all the explanation you need!

Wow. I must say I'm pretty impressed that they are taking measures to ensure that not only are dogs to standard and look pretty, but they're healthy as well!

Hahaha! I'm glad they're putting the health of the dogs and future litters as well (in theory) first and making a plan to ensure such.

From what I've been reading, they weren't disqualified due to genetic conditions. If I remember correctly, the Bulldog has a scratch on the cornea (and had passed all health testing a couple months ago), and the Peke for something similar. So don't get TOO excited.

However, the Clumber Spaniel failed as well: http://terriermandotcom.blogspot.com...er-failed.html

This will never happen in the AKC, unfortunately. But I'm glad someone finally grew the balls to say "hold on now, can these dogs breath?"

A high school friend used to have an OEB that looked very similar to this dog. He was an awesome dog!

I feel like american bullies are heading the same direction as the english bulldog - proportions that make for an unhealthy dog.

American Bulldogs and Olde English Bulldogges, on the other hand, are great dogs.

Thats a great looking dog!

I'm glad they have to pass some sort of health check.. to bad they failed only because of a scratched cornea (which is bad condition for them to have) instead of how terribly bad these breeds are bred!
