I can tell you that the Judges class that I sat in given by Hank Greenwood himself said that "roach back" was not correct when it came to conformation. Roach I think is mostly a genetic thing -- they bred for it for quite a while and it's still there. A severe roach can certainly inhibit a dog, but I don't know how one can be caused -- I guess maybe an injury -- but in most examples, it's bred for, either on purpose or just not paying attention. Is the original ADBA standard anywhere on-line? Carla |

my boy has a roached back, and my vet tells me to NOT put any weight on him, even for with the winter weather and he is an outside dog! I would get your vet on your side and help you explain why your dog looks how it looks and had a back like that.
this is his average summer look ![]() and him after I put about 10 pounds on him for winter ![]() you can still see the roach and if I could get it strait on you can still see the spine bumps but my vet says NO MORE WEIGHT! I trust my vet, they actually know a thing or two |

I am being accused of under feeding my dogs which has caused the back bones and ribs to show. I found a similar looking dog in this forum with exception that mine has a bigger "hunchback". In addition, he is/was deep-chested which may have added to the "skinny" look. |

no his spine is a bit roached, as he gets his winter coat its harder to tell but the vet said that his spine showing was not a problem because of his body structure being how it is I mean Destiny was a lot more roached than Goren and a great example of a roach but I get yelled at for putting 5 pounds on Goren by my vet so if they want to see a lean none conditioned dog that 2 vets would testify in court for me that he is healthy and well taken care of then yea show my boy (when I was attempting to get a dog from the shelter here and Goren's shots were due, his appointment was the day after they were due the vets were really pissed that they did not let me have the dog and said as much that they would back me that I take good care of my pets)

You can google pictures I am sure, some of us do not like posting pics of other peoples dogs. I have read that it is a genetic defect but in some cases can be caused by trauma . Here is a link to the standards American Dog Breeders Association

They're trying to pass laws like that in some other country under the premise that it's "torture breeding". I will try to find it But it sounds like they took this guys dog away because HE did it to the dog? |

Oh, I can see this coming...yes, there are MANY exaggerated structural things in dogs and this is fast becoming a focus point for AR groups...the English Bulldog, some of these "American Bullies", and others -- they are going to go after the breeders.. Also, found it: http://www.astraean.com/borderwars/2...-breeding.html |

Some people do not appreciate having pictures of their dogs posted by other people without their permission in court cases, since if this case goes negative it puts their own dog in danger. Furthermore, a bunch of pictures and anecdota is most likely not going to hold up in court. If he wants this to stick he's going to need someone to help on his behalf, like an ADBA judge, vet or someone in the same vein who can correctly explain the difference between emaciated and conditioned in court

Ok, see if you can get copies of all vet records from prior treatment. Get together any records of your shots. Most who give their own vaccines save the vial label as proof of vaccination.
Go to ADBA website and send them an email to see if they have a judge in your area willing to look at the dog and help you. Print out pics of other conditioned dogs of the same breed using Google to show the judge. Preferably show pics. This will help prove that the dog is not underweight, but merely fit and conditioned. Contact vets and see if you can get a couple to come out and evaluate the dog. Because the case is going to court they should allow access to vets who need to see the dog in your defense. Might be a good idea to ask the ADBA contact you make to recommend a vet int he area that understands what a fit and conditioned dog looks like. And if you can afford it, get a lawyer. Might be worth calling around and seeing if any would be willing to take your case for a reduced fee or payment arrangement if money is an issue. ---------- Post added at 01:49 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:48 PM ---------- Where do you live? Might be a member here knows a good vet or two and a judge in your area. |
