I believe every owner of a Bull breed has to deal with this at some point xD
I've never owned a Bulldog, So I can't really relate to the whole fighting thing. I do get weird looks sometimes when I'm conditioning my GSD mix. And I got plenty (Along with accusations of Cruelty) when I had my old Dachshund/JRT/Beagle pull. I did most of the work though, and that dog really did enjoy it. She was Basically a bigger, stronger, more hyperactive Dachshund without the back problems, loved that dog. I've heard so many people complain about this. Thought It would make a good thread ![]() |

not I, but most people don't know what my adult dog is other than big (best guess is a great dane am staff mix) he is almost 3 and yea no I have never been told I was "abusing" my dogs, my boy shows ribs from spring to fall too and my vet does not like me putting weight on him for summer (I do try though, if I can't cover the ribs his hips are more covered and his spine is more covered lol he is so hyper in the winter months)
anyhow, I will have to see as my Am. Bully pup grows but I really think it has to do with the area people live in, my town is about 8,000 people total, and probably less now we will see when the 2012 census comes out. I also live in a state that has it in the constitution that there cannot be BSL (some grandfathered in areas but nothing can be state wide or added) so I think that helps |

But most likely if you get his ears cropped, have him Weight pull, use a Spring pole, Tether him or use a treadmill you will get LOTS of questions xD |

Tons of times!!
I always am told that my dogs are too skinny, and accused of not feeding them. The moment I say I have Pit BullS (plural), I get strange looks and people ask what I "do" with my dogs. and it's inevitable that someone new moves into the housing develop taking over my good road working space, and I get asked what I'm 'training' my dogs for. |

hehe yea the hubby wanted to leave his ears natural so they are but they are high roses so I think he is still ganna get a ton of comments, he is also a blue brindle so there again, more comments. At 5 months old he still has not gotten that tall so he is ganna be stocky (his mom was only 45 lbs and his dad was like 85, so he might get to be about 60 hopefully not more lol) so I think he is ganna get tons of "is that a pit bull" well I already get it but more when he is an adult.
my city though is really bully breed friendly with the general public, people are scared of my adult dog though but I think its his size, at 25 inches tall at the shoulder he kinda looks like a small horse haha I would move too if bsl ever came knocking, I don't have a spot really for a spring pole, ganna get one though what I have now is a shelf holder thing that can hold up to like 300 lbs attacked to a live pine tree, I want this tree gone bad, then I would use the stump to make a nice arm and hang a good spring pole on it, I have not used this one for over a year. I do flirtpole though, and if I ever get a treadmill its going to be for the dogs >.< I am not getting a dog one though just in case, would rather train them to walk on a human one so I can say that its mine for me to use if ever questioned |

Oh yeah, accused of starving before. Aija, my pit bull, is very lean you can see the last few ribs and she has a great tuck. Shes also very muscular, which actual malnourished dogs are not. The vet told me she is at perfect weight, which I already knew I wasn't starving her, but it really seems a lot of peoples opinion is if you dog isn't fat it is not eating enough.

My city isn't that bad. Two people in my neighborhood has a blue Brindle am Bully (By the looks of it) and a chocolate and white red nose APBT (Mix?) and I haven't seen them get too much trouble. They're both very well behaved dogs. I want to set up a Spring Pole so bad, although it's kind of hard to get my girl interested in it. She gets distracted by EVERYTHING. I imagine my dog would be terrified of a treadmill lol. I don't really have to worry about excercising her legs enough anyway. She runs around in the backyard like an idiot so much, her legs are already pretty muscular. |

Yep. I was sitting on my tailgate outside a department store using my phone and just as I hung up a lady walked up and said " I know what you do". I asked her what and she said I was a dog fighter, she could tell because I had a cage in the back of my pickup (my dog box, it never leaves the pickup) and there was a protective collar hanging from it (four inch biothane cut collar) and she was going to call the cops RIGHT NOW. I just told her to go ahead I'll be sitting right here waiting for them.
I also get the skinny comments. I just tell them that those bay dogs will commonly put on ten miles or more in a single hunt, and when's the last time you saw a fat guy run ten miles? |

I have been accused of abuse because I don't let my dogs roam my yard all day unsupervised and they are not fat (except for Rita, but that'e recent and a side effect of her medications). My neighbor actually called AC and told them I "keep my dogs prisoner in the basement and don't let the out, feed them, or take them to the vet."
I was like "yeah, because I take my dogs out to potty and play and take them back in. I never don't leave them alone in the yard. They are in the basement because that is where my family room is and where I am all day. They have open crates, a couch, loveseat, bankets and a twin bed to lay on. They are fed premium kibble and at healthy weights and i have an entire folder of vet bills from just this year." I was so pissed at that one! The chick who called has a mixed breed that's 11 years old, unlicensed (because they haven't taken her to a vet in years), unspayed, and allowed to walk around off leash when they are out front, but I'm the bad owner????? My newest neighbor behind me thinks I fight my dogs because they play rough in the yard and she has seen it a few times. I told her they were just playing, but she is afraid of all dogs and has no clue about them. I think she hasn't called on me because she is afraid of her own shadow and the other neighbor told her I'm a crazy bitch. I've been told my traffic lead is mean, that I am cruel for not letting my dogs run around at the park and friends parties, that my training to have manners has "taken all the dog out of them"... I stopped caring what people think of me and my dogs long ago. If I didn't learn to blow it off I would be in jail or on probation for assault by now. |

Yep on both counts. Animal control, police, zoning inspectors, . . . . you name it they've been to my house to investigate. It doesn't matter where you live, how many people in your town, bla, bla, bla, all it takes is one. Nothing came of it because my dogs had food, water, and proof of vet care. No scars, treadmills, or proof of any fighting or neglect.
When it was all over and I still had my dogs, whoever it was contacted child protective services. That was 100 times worse than animal control. They questioned family, friends, neighbors. The horror of thinking some idiot could cause the death of your dogs is nothing compared to the thought of losing your child. Knowing you're innocent and knowing how screwed up the govmt is and you could lose everything anyway is horrifying. We ended up fine but never underestimate anyone. Snide comments on the street may seem laughable or offensive but it can and does get worse. Just make sure you always have your bases covered. |
