Default Size question, how big are dachshunds (for a coat)
A gal at work asked me if I'd make her moms dog a coat like I've made my dogs. Okay, sure.
I ask what kind and how big it is. She says it's a Dachshund, and she thinks it's a girl...okay... Not real helpful there.

So.. any idea how big a dachshund is? I know there are different sizes, but this gal wouldn't have a clue if I asked, so I'm guessing it's a standard.

Oh, and while were talking size. How about a Chihuahua? A guy at work wants a coat for his dog too. All he could tell me what his dog is smaller than Frankie. (he doesn't speak English very well)

Doxie's are obviously longer, so I'd ask for measurements. The measurements I always have to take of my guys for coats is back length, neck to base of tail, girth and neck. I have a friend that breeds working Doxie's and I'd say they weigh in between 10-13lbs. I think there are "mini's" though who top out around 8lbs. To be safe I'd just get measurements, it might be a standard, mini... super mini, or really fat!

Chi's.. I wouldn't guess they'd get much larger than 6-8lbs but with breeders nowadays there's tea cups, mini's, standards, giants, purple spotted ones so I'd just get measurements to be safe.

Back when I was working at a chain pet store the Weenies usually fit a SM or MS coat, but measurements should be taken to be sure

I agree that if you're going to be making coats for specific dogs, you should be given measurements for those dogs.

Yeah you would need measurements on the specific dogs so the coats fit just right. Depending on the dachshund it should be small-medium. I would think a chihuahua would be extra small-small. It just depends on the individual dog.

Yeah, I know getting actual measurments would be MUCH easier.. but you need to understand the gal asking these questions. She wouldn't have a clue what I was asking.
To give you a couple examples of her 'smarts'... a couple weeks ago a guy at work had a seizure. She asked me if had it because he isn't very smart.
She saw a toy I made for my dogs... braided fleece with a knot on each end.. She thougth that was the coolest thing ever and thought it was cool that I knew how to make something like that.
Nice person, but not real bright.

I'll just wing it and leave a lot of adjustment room and hope it fits.
