Default Smarter than the average bear
Well, I stand corrected. It turns out that my little Rudeboy really is good for something!
When we were walking, my phone fell out of my pocket and into the snow but I didn't notice it.
Rudy dived into the snowbank and came up with my phone in his mouth!

I've always kind of thought of Rudy as... well, stupid. He sure showed me!
It leads me to wonder if knew that the phone is something I need/use all the time or if he just grabbed it out of curiosity or thinking it was a toy...
Guess I'll never know, but I wanted to share.

Have you had seemingly unintelligent dogs prove your assumptions wrong? If so, how?

Well, it's not that he is unintelligent as much as it is he is less intelligent than the others.
It seems so anyways. Could be that he's still a pup and needs to grow some smarts!

Had a dachshund mix who wouldn't listen to a word I said, but figured out how to get out of pretty much anything.

Slayer proves to me time and time again she is smarter then I give her credit for. Had a close call this weekend while helping baby sit and she made me REALLY proud. I was sitting in the living room and the kids were running back and forth from the couch and into the hall..the little boy decides to chase Slayer and pretend she is a bad guy. She gladly plays along, suddenly she grabs her tail and karate chops her...I lept off the couch ready to stop her from snapping...and she just whimpered and rolled over and licked him. He was put on time out...but I am glad my dog is smart enough to know better then to retaliate.

Good dog!

Snickers was as smart as a box of rocks but could track any trail like nobody's business once you let him know what he was looking for. Once, my friend lost my ferret outside when he slipped his lead and ran off. Once got him to where Scooter got lost I told him to "find Scooter" he shoved his nose in the ground and took off to a neighbor's wood pile and there he was

Aw, Slayer's a good girl. Bransen gets beat up by kids all the time (of course I will let the child know if they are getting out of hand) and he is so great with them, he loves getting roughed up by them and always just has the most blissful look on his face.

That is a real cute story about Snickers finding Scooter, too.

Before I officially took Jade (when she was still with my parents after I'd moved out, she's the family dog, got her when I was six) she opened the gate (speaking of smart) and got out of my parents' yard just before I showed up there. So I took Bransen to the open gate and said "where's Jade? Where'd Jade go?" and he pulled me down the alley, around a few blocks to where a man told me he just a black dog heading toward the park. We take her there for walks so it makes sense she'd go there, but when I tried going that way Bransen kept yanking in another direction, he was determined so I let him "take the lead" again. We get down another street, around the block and sure enough, there she is! Bransen was so happy he did the job and I praised him like crazy, once I had Jade leashed up. I was so proud of him!

He likes to follow scents, if I knew the local legalities of it (been trying to find out) I'd like to try some hunting with him.

It's totally stupid, but most APBT I know are the same way! They are so retardedly happy the kids are showing them any kind of attention that they don't care they are being hurt.

You're right, it was my man's phone too so I would have had some explaining to do.
Hahaha yeah I don't think Rudy's jaw is strong enough to do that.
He indeed got an extra butt scratch and praise for his good deed.

Sugar surprised me last night.

She was chewing on a bone. There are a half dozen or more bones and chews laying around the house ... but Mason wanted the one Sugar had of course ... and he kept annoying, barking and growling at Sugar for it.

Sugar was growling back at Mason to let him know the bone was hers and she wasn't gonna give it up.

This drama when on a minute or two, right here beside my computer chair.

Finally, I tried to intervene on Sugars behalf and reached down and tapped Mason on his bum to get his attention.

IMMEDIATELY ... Sugar dropped the bone ... looked at me with ears laid back submissively and whined.

I picked the bone up and offered it to Sugar.

Sugar took the bone in her mouth and TOSSED IT TO MASON.

She felt bad for Mason and tried to make it up to him. I guess Sugar's message to me is to not mess with Mason when they are interacting. If he needed calibrating ... SHE would have done it LOL.

Wait ... that's "compasionate", not "smart" ... never mind ~~~

Aw how cute!
Bransen got upset that Rudy took his ball once and Rudy put it back into Bransen's mouth. It was so funny.
