Sounds like she was protecting her pups. If she still acts that way when the pups are weaned, have them take her to the vet to see if she has a hormone imbalance.

Honestly, she should probably be in a less stressful environment. Maybe there are some rescues in the area who would be willing to foster the dog (I know some rescues will foster for folks in the military) and find homes for the pups.

Until then, they should keep momma and her pups in a separate room away from the kid.
