Default WAFL Fixtures released
With the release of the WAFL fixtures yesterday, Im still trying to get my head around how the premiership team Claremont play bottom team Peel 3 times, yet East Perth (who won just 6 games) play Peel only twice.

And Claremont's first 3 games are against teams in the bottom four, yet East Perth play the teams who finished 1st and 2nd after the home & away season in the opening two games ??

Baffling beyond belief....

Oh yeh, and East Fremantle dont play until round 3.

Gas Perth only play Peel twice next year and TBH i am relieved. Every year Perth seems to be pencilled in for 3 games against Peel, not sure if the WAFC are trying to help Perth or Peel but I am relieved we aren't playing our 1st or second game down there.

Claremont may not be as strong as they have been the last couple of seasons. It will take them time to adjust to a new coach who is very much a rookie. Mark Webb only retired the year before last and has served just one year as an assistant at his own club. Not a great apprenticeship but they obviously rate him highly. Claremont have also lost Beau Wilkes, a big loss and I think Brabazon is going to Canberra. We also play Claremont 3 times but i welcome that also. We need to measure ourselves against the best opposition. There are a lot of unknowns going into next year so we can't read too much into who we play i don't think.

Yes i would hate to be in EF's shoes. Perth have had starts like that in the past where we have had something like a bye in the first round then Peel (away). It's like having 2 byes to start the season.

The best time to roll the reining premiers is probably round one... You got them then DD.

But we have them in round 2 when they may be angry.

I know in the 80's when Swans won their hatrick of flags, they actually lost their opening game in each of those premiership years.

The EP vs P Good Friday game could be a beauty. Expect a good turnout for that one, like last year. Good to see some Sunday games pencilled in when opposed to AFL home games.

And I still can't work out why for the second year in a row, the season starts off with only two matches; the other five teams having a bye.

Yet there is NO AFL matches on that weekend.

Yes hopefully both Perth and EP get off to a good start to the season and it's a top 4 clash. Would love to see 5 or 6000 for a Perth v EP clash.

I am sure the corresponding game last year between EP & Subi got about 5,000 DD.... So if the demons are up a bit I would expect an easy 6,000 at that game. The public showed in numbers that they wanted to see footy on Good Friday. After all we are not all bloody religious (But love the day off work.... cheers god.)

Mind you I worked all of last Easter and missed that game myself. Hopefully not this year.

I'm far from religious in fact my missus reckons im going to hell but ive always had my mates and there wives over for a good friday bbq and that wont be changing next season..i wont be there!

Reckon the good crowd last season Gas would have had a lot to do with the fact it was a "home game" for both teams...supporters of both clubs were in there "comfort zone".

Just on the fixturing i think in part they are a bloody disgrace. How does Peel play Claremont twice in three weeks,rd 9 then again rd 11????
I also dont like Sunday wafl footy thats just my opinion!

I like Saturday arvo footy too, but personally I find it bloody hard these days to get there because of work. The odd Sunday game allows some of us to get to a few games.

I guess everyone has different views for different reasons.

And we are all going to hell 30 plus....

Yeh i'm stoked we have been included in this fixture. Should be a good crowd and a great atmosphere. Leederville oval is a one of the few decent grounds too, so it should be a good day

What they should have done on Good Friday is make it a double-header with the 2 co-tennants. For example have...

2pm East Perth vs Perth
5pm Subiaco vs West Perth

or something like that. It would create a great atmosphere and possibly a 10,000 strong crowd. Something different anyway and it would certainly not hurt the image of the WAFL. A big crowd is always a good look.

Soobie can't play on Good Friday, 6th April because they have a WAFL bye that weekend after being allocated a Foxtel Cup match on Saturday 7th against Port Adelaide in Adelaide.

Otherwise I am sure we would have played against them again in a Leederville derby.

The Leederville derby was excellent last season, shame it couldn't happen this year. Also shows how much pull the WAFL/WAFC have over the AFL.

I reckon Subi will get absolutely creamed in the Foxtel Cup. So many changes can happen to a team in the off season and Subi have been decimated by players leaving and retiring their own supporters will hardly recognise them when they run out in round 1.

I don't like this format of playing interstate clubs during the home and away season. It should be played after the finals and should only be between the teams that make the GF in each state.

No double headers please Gas
Not up to me 77 !!

I dont think the WAFL are that way inclined anyway. Im just putting something out there to combat all the opposition the comp faces these days. When it is warranted, maybe then it can be justified. But very rarely is it warrented I know.

I'm with you DD, i don't like this foxtel cup crap. I think it interferes with clubs true goal - the flag. I wasn't happy my tigers were in it last season, and again next season. We went all way to a losing grand final in it last year for the grand prize of 25 or 30 grand - why bother i say? Is good for the wafl teams not in it though.

Amazingly g&b you guys still won the flag while also making the Foxtel Crap Final (how many turned up?). And you made the GF in the colts and ressies with a win in the ressies as well. That goes to show the depth within your club but i would say your club is the exception to the rule. If Perth do ok next year i would not want to see our club play in the Foxtel Cup the following year. Success in the WAFL is far more important to me but if it was a carnival at the end of the year then i'm all for it.

I also reckon if say Perth () played Central Districts in a Foxtel Cup final at Patersons at the end of October i reckon 20 000 plus would turn up.

Thats a big call DD, if you reckon 20 thousand demons would come to a foxtel grand final in october, - how many demon supporters do you think would come to a wafl grand final - 35 to 40 thousand?

Oldg&b it's not just about Perth supporters. Let's be realistic, there will be a thousand or so that will come out of the woodwork but when a club that hasn't had success for so long it generates a lot of curiosity from opposition supporters that want to see what it's like to see a red and black jumper in September. I reckon that might drag another 500 - 1000 supporters from each other club plus maybe 5000 AFL followers that don't normally bother with the WAFL.

No disrespect intended (though probably unavoidable) but how many turned up to watch two sides in this years GF that have dominated WAFL finals for the last 30 years? It turns the purists off to see the same old teams making the GF year in year out while the same teams finish down near the bottom year in year out.

Not saying Perth in a GF would pull 35 - 40 000 but i reckon we would give 30 000 a nudge (possibly more against EP or SD), and regarding a Foxtel Cup final in October i am thinking of the days when the two premiers from each state would play each other at the end of the season a couple of weeks after the GF. I was there when Subi played Hawthorn and i reckon there were 30 000 there then. It was a great game, not sure who won, i think Subi may have got up?

Anyway if Perth make the GF in the next couple of years no doubt this post will be dragged up, one way or another!
