The Sun may burn out, it may never rain again. the Arabs may take over the world and as you know anything in general MAY happen. Now polio was something you could really go crazy over during the summer months years ago. In 1918 most deaths were caused by complications brought on by the flu. The reason is simple, we didn't have the meds we do now for fighting other infections..

Typical, the Ball Brothers swinging together.

If this in no more than a "sky is falling" post, then why is it that advisors at the CDC and Johns Hopkins are advising people to take person responsibility and store provisions for 15 days?

I thought the observation was a brief overview through a historical window bringing us to the present. Of course there are those who would have you believe that our tight medical system could solve this without missing a beat, but they would be wrong, as they are so often wrong when expressing their very own opinions.

These same people would probably have said "the sky is falling" when someone posted a heads-up about the weak and failing levies in New Orleans, of course they would know what they were talking about. NOT

"Nov 16, 2005 (CIDRAP News) – A recent laboratory study has produced more evidence that infection of human lung cells with the H5N1 avian influenza virus leads to intense inflammation similar to what was seen in victims of the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic.

Researchers from Hong Kong report that lung cells growing in a laboratory responded much more intensely to the H5N1 virus than to an ordinary flu virus, even though the viruses reproduced at about the same rate, according to the report published online by Respiratory Research.

The H5N1 viruses were "more potent inducers" of cytokines and chemokines—chemical messengers that trigger inflammation—than H1N1 viruses were, says the report by a team led by J.S.M. Peiris of the University of Hong Kong. A flood of inflammation-triggering chemicals released by the immune systems has been referred to as a "cytokine storm."

Autopsies of H5N1 avian flu victims in Vietnam and elsewhere have revealed lungs choked with debris from the excessive inflammation triggered by the virus. Similar severe lung damage was frequently reported in victims of the 1918 pandemic, which disproportionately killed people with the strongest immune systems—young, healthy adults."

You'll have a lot more to worry about than the flu if everyone stocks up & stays home for 15 days.. Think about it .. I'm sure the congress will pass a law before long that you're not allowed to catch the bird flu. That will put an end to that..

EMT would be medical, I do EM, emergency management, which was explained years ago now. First Response, to your state for example, when your beer was rocking on the table... structural steel. Or in Mexico City in 85, or the floods in the midwest, or the numerous hurricanes throughout the nation. I do very little travel these days having vested interest in a local service business, but I do maintain my involvement in State and local affairs. When I wasn't looking into emergencies, I did contract building for different Government agencies, which again, brought me to the left coast, and places like Bealle and McClellen as well as throughout the lower 48, including places like White Sands, Cheyenne Mt., Rose Bud, along with historical restorations on buildings and monuments.

I know, it's a rarity for a Cop to have flexible working capabilities, beyond private security and or crossing guard, but some of us had to make a living building America, not just sucking on it's civil service t!t and eating donuts.

I wouldn't go so far as to call it "very good", but it contains a few facts, and the author appears to know what a bacterial secondary is, which probably puts it ahead of at least 50% of the field.

The plain fact is: nobody knows. There are pandemic scenarios, and there are "not much happening" scenarios. And no-one really has a clue which is more likely to happen when. Or what the impact will be, until we actually have an epidemic.

What we can say is that it appears that influenza still has the ability to deal us a pretty heavy blow in public health terms. There's no point in panicking about anything, flu included. But there's little sense in pretending it can't happen, either. The author's observation is a bit like sitting in a trailer home in Tornado Alley, and pointing out that the last time you saw a supercell, all that happened was a bit of a thunderstorm.

Davy just a question. Do you ever or have you ever, in say, the last ten years read ANYTHING that you didn't think you knew more than the author of that book or article no matter the subject?

Dumbo do youself a favor.. Say.. "I am inherently Stupid" four time real fast. Hopefully it will come to you after the third time you say it..
