Default Canon or Panasonic?
The Canon G12 or the Panasonic DCM-LX5?

I like messing around with camera settings, but I know that both of these will be totally awesome at it. But which of these would do the best job and point and shot photos for when the wife just wants to take nice, speedy pictures all the time in all conditions.

I had a quick look at the reviews.

I would say the Canon. It has the 5x optical zoom over 3.8x of the Panasonic, which when you have compact that you can't swap out lenses 5x is already limiting enough. Both have similar capability otherwise. Though if you want something more compact it seems the dimensions of the Panasonic are smaller.

I would go for the panasonic hands down

The LX5 has a wider angle, higher ISO, 6fps continuous shoot (vs Canon's 2fps), Larger sensor, wider aperture and is both thinner and lighter.

The Canon has a flip-out viewfinder, better build quality (IMO) and arguably better IQ.

They are both amazing compacts, if features is more important go Panasonic, if build quality is more important go Canon.

I've owned a few digi cams in my time but i just bought my Mrs the Canon Powershot SX210 IS for xmas. Blinding camera. I can't say ive come across either of the afforementionned cameras though.
Either way though you get a quality camera these days for £100+

Very close...

Image quality wise, they're both very good. So your choice would be based on other aspects such as features and handling.

The biggest differences I can see are listed below:

Panasonic
  • Wider lens (24mm equiv)
  • Faster lens (higher shutter speed in low light)
  • Smaller, considerably lighter

Canon
  • Swivel LCD
  • More physical buttons/switches
  • Optical viewfinder for shooting in bright sunlight
  • Longer lens

Considering what the camera will be used for (travel/holiday camera) I would give the Panasonic the edge, due to its pocketable size/weight and its wider lens which is great for landscape and scenery.

Canon.
All the way.
I own the S95 (which is basically the same in a smaller format). The G12 have won various best camera awards in its category.

I'm thinking of getting the S95. Just been looking at reviews this minute. I can't find a compact with better IQ, can you also recommend?

Well I have the G10 and that only just fits in my pocket (in a rather bulky way). If I had to choose because portability is important to me then I would sway to the Panasonic too. With that said, if I had to pick which one would be better overall for photographs I still stand by my previous statement that I would pick the Canon.
