Default Would you trust a car that drove itself?
http://editorial.autos.msn.com/artic...mentid=1072785 [no]

This is one of those stories that's almost annoying. Its like the flying car that you know darn well would never be allowed. Cars that literally controlled themselves would probably give me a heart attack, because like most "techy" people, I know very well that there would absolutely be unexpected failures and glitches that would kill people.

Would you really trust an automated car to drive you through heavy snow next to a tractor trailer? Or trust it to respond to the sudden blowout of the car in front of you? Or react correctly to just about any unexpected scenario?

The first automated Pile-up, and the things would be banned forever. And this is from somebody who usually loves new tech.

I cannot see this happening until computers are as intelligent (or more so) than people, and even then, I am not sure I could ever trust a self driving vehicle enough to fall asleep in one.

It's all relative. I wouldn't like to be the only one in the car when it was driving but if it was a choice of that or my mother driving I'd take the car.

.
You mean like the 'glitches' people do today that kill 1.2 mil a year? I think cars are not the solution for the future, automated or not. Better mass transit and properly built cities are. Otherwise we'll still get disgusting stuff like this.

Yeah too bad building things that way is way too expensive and completely infeasible, and filled with numerous flaws.

I wouldn't, no.

And that would take ALL the fun out of driving for me.

I hope you're kidding? If not, your stupidity levels have just shown themselves as you should have kept in control of your car.

I have no idea what you're getting at there, computers are as 'intelligent' as you can program them. Or do you want some true AI?

As for the car, as long as there is some kind of quick manual override, yeah I don't mind. It would make those 8 hour trips to San Fransisco more bearable. We already have the park itself Lexus.

I would love a car that drove itself. I wouldn't leave it on auto all the time, but for times like when you are driving down the motorway or late at night when you are tired, it would be great.

I think we will get to the point where just about every car can drive itself and are all linked into a central database that monitors and controls traffic flow. This will help to solve a lot of the traffic problems we experience now, because the computers will be able to analyze traffic patterns and route traffic in such a way as to minimize blockages.

I have no driver license so I cant really compare but since im kind of a geek I would love a self-controlled car but if I want to drive I would want an option like "manual, auto".

I cant believe that you opened that it would have flaws considering getting a drivers license isn't the hardest thing in the world and car accidents is quite a big issue around the world. [surrender]

True Ai would be nice, yes. Self parking cars are cute, but a true autonomous vehicle on the road, trying to emulate the subtle decisions a human makes based not just on knowledge of the road, but also knowledge of the world is not something that I expect to see soon, or would trust lightly.

Promising, but we aren't there yet!

I was just thinking about this the other day....how cool it would be if it was a reality.

I can see it now, getting pulled over while completely hammered. Only get a DWI if you had it set to manual.

Now when those drunk idiots get into a car it can drive them home.

i am kidding. however i do think it can be a little unsafe as you tend to rest your braking foot away from the brake pedal with cruise control on. plus, its annoying to have the cruise control turn off when you touch the brakes all the time so you tend to try and avoid using them, which sounds mad but it happens.

A DMU (Diesel Multiple Unit) or EMU (Electrical Multiple Unit) can (basically it means it's got a cab at both ends).

I don't think a computer driver is any more dangerous than the morons that are already out on the roads.

Actually I was thinking along those lines too. What would state troopers and police do when all vehicles automatically drive safely and obey the law? Do you know how much money the average state makes ambushing people for this or that on the streets? How would they replace all of that cash?

States would hate it. Meanwhile the insurance companies would probably be lobbying like hell for it to be mandatory. Assuming that that failed, how would these cars and your average crazy, dodge-abruptly-across-three-lanes-to-catch-the-exit manual driver fare together?

As for your final sentence, that's called a cab. [yes]
