generally in the UK there is no actual loss of service. The trouble is you will have two mobile numbers for a while and it's hard to know which one does what.

At least over here in the US I could call out from my new phone on a different carrier almost instantly and my number would show up on caller ID for the other person. As far as receiving calls on the new carrier it took about half a day but it seems it works differently in the UK.
Most other devloped nations do it in 24-48h however we get srewed over here becasue OFTEL are a bunch of useless gits who won't make them do what that CAN and WON'T, just so they can discourage us from moving provider.

Pretty easy. Just call up your existing operator and ask for a PAC code. Give this to the new operator youre going to, and they will then let you know when the switch will happen.
