Default TV and Internet connection
Hey guys, this is not strictly NY-related so I thought I'd post here not to go off-topic, I' moving in a week's time and I'm keen to set up a nice bachelor pad for myself

A few questions:

- what's the best, bad-assest package for digital TV? I've heard Directv and Comcast, are there others, and which one would you pick (budget considerations aside)?

- How about Internet connection, best to go with a bundle from the TV providers or take it separately?

- Finally, what are the cheapest options for buying TV and other electronics, online or otherwise?

I have Direct TV and I think that it has the most HD channels available. I have very little in the way of service disruption. If abny, it is typically during a heavy thunder or lightning storm. They have excellent custome service both online and via phone.

For electronics, my preference is J&R, which is located down by City Hall. I think they have very knowleable staff and they don't really attempt the hard sell. You can usually find a decent sale and everyday pricing is pretty good. For larger items (like big screen LCD or Plasma TVs) they will deliver and install. You can purchase items via their website (usually with good discounts).

As far as cable TV goes, I'd stay away from Time-Warner. They have the worst customer service in the city. For a while, they were the only cable option in my neighborhood. I actually discontinued service and lived without TV for a year or so rather than have to deal with them any longer.

I'm assuming you're moving to Manhattan? If so, I'm not sure if FIOS is available yet, but for internet it's great. I didn't get FIOS TV because I was told by several different people at Verizon that NHL Network was part of the standard package, only to find out the day they came to install that it was in fact part of the sports package, and I wasn't willing to pay for an entire package to have one channel.

For TV I have DirecTV, which has the NHL Network standard. Goes out every now and then when it rains, which is annoying because I'm usually in the middle of recording something or watching hockey. Other than that it's fine, but I think they charge for HD service (I don't have an HDTV....yet)

If you can get FIOS, definitely do it at least for the high speed internet. Optimum bills itself as faster than FIOS, but I believe FIOS offers up to 50 down/20 up. I have 20/5 right now and that's fine since I download more than I upload.

As far as electronics goes, J&R is fine though I've never actually purchased anything there. The staff was very knowledgeable and helpful when I did have questions though. There's a new 24-hour Best Buy in Union Square (14th st on the east side) but I don't know if I'd wanna buy much of anything from them. The one here in south Brooklyn is a disaster. I've had problems with everything from cd's and dvd's to TV's that I've bought there.

Direct TV has HD for $10 a month extra.

When I was at the U of Iowa I watched the Best Buy guys unpack CD players by sticking their hand in the crease of the box and popping the contents to the floor. But the 0% financing they offer (on just about everything) is a nice hook.
