Bah. Movies like this offer a cartoon version of manliness. It's nothing more than a bunch of aging, washed up actors pretending to be tough.

The depiction of genuine masculinity in cinema these days is non-existent, and movies like this feed into our generation's nostalgia for the real thing. It reinforces our perception that the absence of having to fight in wars, combined with the comforts of modern technology, has made us soft, especially compared to our fathers' generation and the movies of their era. Worse, in the absence of genuine masculinity, it's replaced with a contrived, hyper-violent, grunting version of manliness. In art historical terms, we would refer to its style as mannered, the product of a culture in decline.

Of course, I still plan on watching it and will probably enjoy it.
That pretty much describes every action movie in the 80's that we all grew up with. Over the top, extremely cheesy, and fun as hell to watch!

That's why they mostly sucked and we only used to like them because we tend to watch them at the beginning of our adolescence.

Must be why my dad loved the 80's action films then when he was in his mid 30's, young at heart

They were all fantastic. I continue to practice the splits each day due to blood sport.

It's missing a lot of people, tbh. But I think the cast is impressive enough as it is.

I don't think Jackie Chan did war-inspired movies. Actually I don't remember him actually holding a gun towards anyone in a movie.

Well, see, I stand corrected. I don't remember him staring a lot of this type of roles however. Put it that way: it would surprise me to see him in a movie like The Expendables.
