Bah. Movies like this offer a cartoon version of manliness. It's nothing more than a bunch of aging, washed up actors pretending to be tough.
The depiction of genuine masculinity in cinema these days is non-existent, and movies like this feed into our generation's nostalgia for the real thing. It reinforces our perception that the absence of having to fight in wars, combined with the comforts of modern technology, has made us soft, especially compared to our fathers' generation and the movies of their era. Worse, in the absence of genuine masculinity, it's replaced with a contrived, hyper-violent, grunting version of manliness. In art historical terms, we would refer to its style as mannered, the product of a culture in decline. Of course, I still plan on watching it and will probably enjoy it. |
