Here's the scenario.
I currently play TA 845 Irons. I have had them for 13 or so years. I want to try something new. My buddy has a set of Callaway x-22 tours. He said he would sell them to me for 300-350 in the end of April. Now I typically would not have looked at tour irons but for the price I am very tempted. I went to Austad's today and hit some clubs in the simulator. They guy helping me asked me a few questions. I asked him if I could hit some balls. I asked if I could hit the 22 tours, r9's and the CG7's. He told me I was probably not good enough to play with the 22 tours, which maybe I'm not but he then proceeded to give my some Ping I & G15's. Aren't the Ping I's on the same level as the 22 tours? So the question is, do i buy these 22 tours at a steal even if I'm not at the best of the game cause they are probably more forgiving than what I have now or do I just stick to what I have? I will not spend 6-700 on a set of irons this year. It is not feasible at the moment. What would you do? |

it's a tough one for me to vote on, but if you had 300-350 to spend you could probably find all kinds of good options in the GI category. you could probably pick up a set of the x22's (not tour version), nike vr full cavities, taylormade burners, cleveland cg7's, ping g10's on ebay for that kind of money. or check out wilson's di7's on ebay. you have a lot of options i'd think.

really? See I learn something new everyday. JB, I was sitting here just starting to wonder if I should just re-grip the 845's and call it a day. I just don't want to spend the money if it really isn't going to make a difference. How are people liking the nickents? What is different between the 845's and Nickents.

Hard to beat those old 845's. I bought a set years ago for my son and he still has them, though he was an extremely talented player. Without knowing your game and what you like in looks a feel it would be very hard for anyone to suggest. As JB said, hit both on the monitor and let the numbers tell the tale.

Do you really think $300 - $350 is a steal? Maybe $300 is good, but it looks like $350 is the average.

I agree with the others though - the TA845s are great sticks. I owned them for many years and only switched because I wanted irons with a little less offset. Also, I think that $350 is an OK deal, especially if your buddy's x22 tours are in pristine condition. Is his a 3-PW set? |
