![]() ![]() I had a question bros and sis's, which I can't seem to find a clear answer to (though to be honest I haven't put enough effort into it either). We all know well and clear that Fajr time is one of the times when one should not make any other salat besides Fajr. My question is, does that forbidden time start when it is Fajr time on the clock? (according to any time-table we may be following), OR, can one pray other salat such as nawafil/Witr until a few minutes before Fajr jamaat, then make the Sunnahs and pray in congregation. In other words, let's say Fajr time starts at 5:45 AM where I am, however congregation in the masjid is not until 6:30AM. Should I make sure that I am completely FINISHED praying Tahajjud & then Witr in the end before the clock hits 5:45 AM, or can I pray Tahajjud and then Witr until close to 6:30 AM, then pray Fajr salat in congregation. Or, if I was not praying in congregation, could I keep praying Tahajjud until after 5:45 AM, then pray Witr, then Salat-ul-Fajr, keeping in mind that we are now well past the actual start time of Fajr. Also, any evidence from Quran and/or Hadith would be appreciated as well in regards to this. ![]() ![]() |

Assalaamu'alaikum,
I'm not the most knowledgable person so don't know the ayats or ahadith to give you, however you must pray tahajjud and witr before the time of fajr starts on your timetable. This is the actual start of fajr and those prayers must be prayed during the time of isha, otherwise the time to pray them has expired. The mosque congregation time is just set for the convenience of the jamaat and does not indicate the exact time for the start of fajr. Wallahu a'lam |

![]() ![]() Following hadiths r showing examples of offering Tahajjud & Witr at night. There could be more hadiths on this subject, plz take help others Bukhari :: Volume 2 :: Book 21 :: Hadith 223 Narrated 'Aisha: Allah's Apostle used to offer eleven Rakat and that was his prayer. He used to prolong the prostration to such an extent that one could recite fifty verses (of the Quran) before he would lift his head. He used to pray two Rakat (Sunna) before the Fajr prayer and then used to lie down on his right side till the call-maker came and informed him about the prayer. Bukhari :: Volume 2 :: Book 21 :: Hadith 238 Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Umar : A man said, "O Allah's Apostle! How is the prayer of the night?" He said, "Two Rakat followed by two Rakat and so on, and when you apprehend the approaching dawn, offer one Raka as Witr." Bukhari :: Volume 2 :: Book 21 :: Hadith 261 Narrated 'Aisha: Allah's Apostle used to offer thirteen Rakat in the night prayer and on hearing the Adhan for the morning prayer, he used to offer two light Rakat. ![]() |

The end time for tahajjud and witr is when fajr time enters, but if you were praying witr and the adhan for fajr is called, then your witr is still valid because you began the prayer in its correct time.
Once the adhan of fajr is called you can pray 2 units of a sunnah prayer and the fard of fajr prayer only, unless one is making up missed prayers. |

Hazrat A’yesha (radhiallahu anha) is reported to have said (with regards to the tahajjud salah of Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam): "He (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) never used to perform more than eleven rakats, whether in Ramadhan or out of Ramadhaan. Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) would perform long rakats in two units of four rakats each with such excellence and devotion which cannot be described. Thereafter he would perform three rakats of witr salah". [Sahih Muslim, chapter on salatul layl, Hadith 738]
