My friend was walking on a paved trail when 3 teenagers pulled up (illegally) in a car and tried to abduct her. Her 10 month old shephard got one by the throat, ending the confrontation. My friend ran away and bolted into a stranger's house without knocking. She was covered in blood from the assailant.

Police were called. The kid was located at the hospital, as he ended up needing surgery.

Nothing happened to her or her dog. The kids were not armed. And when her home owners insurance was being cancelled, the police wrote a letter to her company and she was not dropped.

I believe if you set your dog onto them then you can be in a lot of trouble. Even calling the dogs name can be deemed setting to dog after them...

Of course, knowing the APBT isn't a guardian breed, i wouldn't have this worry. However, if I had a guardian breed, like a Rottie or GSD, I would think that if the person were injured, they could sue you for their injuries.. and if they didn't survive the incident, then their families could sue you. It's a fine line, and sometimes, which way it leans, will depend on which judge you get, or which officers respond to the call. Not a situation I ever want to find myself in.

Well, honestly I don't think my dogs would kill the assailant, I mean I'm sure they could, but my guess is my Rottie at the very least would injure the person.

But usually if some suspicious person comes within 20 feet of us, he goes from a goof ball to a growling guard dog, and that's usually enough to get them to go in the opposite direction.

If one of the dogs did get ahold of someone, I have a friend who happens to be a lawyer. Even if they were defending me, I'd still be calling her while I waited for the cops to show up.

unless my attacker was a coon, or an armadillo, or a cat... I would not have to worry much about my dog attacking them...

Funny how someone intending to do some serious harm to you can sue you if you protect yourself. I would let star whoop up on them I'm sorry if he would attack

around here you'd be in VERY deep shit lol

I can't use a kitchen knife against a burgler twice my size if he doesn't has a kitchen knife too because we have to defend ourselves "with equal force"..

and a dog being deemed a weapon if it attacks..
so unless the guy actually points a gun at me.. I'm fucked if my dog bites or even scratches him, and that regardless of breed..

if I were you, I'd check the local laws to be sure..

People put too much stock in labels. Just make sure someone tells the dogs what they are supposed to be or they may mistakenly think they are dogs.

That is funny...the trainer that I worked with and I had the same conversation. Just wish I could make them understand English for a few minutes so I could explain what I am trying to teach you...lol...

Not a guardian breed, but a good one does have common sense.

I would NOT fault an APBT which reacted to a true threat and showed (gasp!) "human aggression".

**While I would never expect my dogs to "protect" me, I do feel like if they thought I were in danger, they would respond. But to have one that I "expected" to guard me, I wouldn't depend solely on it. My dogs are extremely human friendly, and are more likely to lick all over someone. However, if they did sense I were in danger and responded as such, I would not be disappointed in them. Not all dogs are human friendly, and some are more so than others. It generally is going to depend on the dog itself, and each dog in each situation, is going to react differently.

I had an Am Staf that was as human friendly as they come.

But, she probably saved my life one day when she stopped someone from advancing on me at a very isolated pond we were swimming at...

Having any breed of dog that loves you and is loyal enough to defend you, is an awesome dog in my book. Luckily, I've never been in a situation where my dogs needed to defend me, but the one time I was, I would have given anything to have had a dog with me that night.

Fault it?

I'd buy the dog the largest cut of filet mignon from the best steakhouse in town.

Meee tooooo!!! I truthfully didn't know that about the breed in the guardianship thing. But from what I have seen from other dogs we have had, even the little Min Pin that I have. they all love their owners. My little Min Pin has gone after my son. Course, he can't do much...lol...Just don't want to and hope none of you have to face that circumstance...one way or the other...your dog loves you!!! They are awesome!!

When my friend split up with her boyfriend and was staying with me he got drunk one night and started beating on my door and tried kicking it in. Up until then Angel never made a peep when someone knocked on the door. Angel sensed how scared I was and went beserk barking, growling, and jumping at the door. She kept it up until the cops got there. I know if it wasn't for Angel he would have tried harder to get in. My door was just a flimsy trailer door. Needless to say I praised her like all get out and bought her the biggest bone I could find.

One good thing is that it doesn't seem like most people know that an APBT isn't a good guardian...there are lots of people when we're out somewhere that very obviously steer clear of Pooh. Little do they know he only wants to lick them half to death!
