Default Last Chance Highway
Interesting new show. Wondering what people think of it? I love how her husband was saying Rusty was loving it there while he was being bullied by like 8 dogs at one time, LOL.

I haven't watched it, but i think those rescues that transport dogs far away are rearranging chairs on the deck of a sinking ship.

A) great way to hide a dogs bite history
B) so, ya really think the area the dog is going to doesn't have a homeless dog problem? Maybe people can rescue and adopt from their local dogs.. Seriously, I see people arranging rides for dogs from Ohio to MI because the dog is on its last days and will be put down and they want to save it. Wonder if it occured to anyone that there are a shitload of dogs already in MI that are on their last days and going to be put down.

I think if they were taking dogs that where to be euthed because of breed, say down in the county in FL and giving them a chance in a different area ok. But there is a problem everywhere, maybe if they had a request for a breed at this location then they could transport some there but other than that its just a crap shoot.

They "approve" people over the phone and then proceed to truckload an outrageous number of dogs and then disperse them to everyone standing in line. Interesting. Nauseating.

I watched this morning... I don't know how they approved that guy by talking to him on the phone, for a bulldog mix pup, no home check, he admitted he was not home much and would have to hire people to walk her.

I saw their group of dogs out running loose had bull breeds out in the pack as well...

They transport who knows how many dogs and hands them out to the person who knows the name of the dog they're picking up, he literally said "I'm looking for *name*" and they handed her over, and he left.

I think they think they're doing good, and I'm sure they've saved many lives, who how many of those dogs end up back in shelters? Or on the news because the furdaddy they gave the bulldog bitch to took her to dog parks for socialization?

While I was looking at dogs I found a pit mix who had been brought in to a rescue by a family who did something similar to this. They drive through areas with many high kill shelters, fill their truck with dogs who are about to be PTS, and distribute them to breed-specific rescues. I'm sure this system has it's faults too, but it sounds better than what they're doing on the show.

That sounds borderline retarded unless they are taking the time to have someone qualified do a temperament test at least.

A lot of dogs on their last days in shelters are there for a reason! Like maybe being out of control and aggressive or showing signs of aggression toward their former owners and the people who come looking at the shelter sense "something wrong" with the dog and pass it by? But then the bleeding hearts show up and don't see that since they want to save em all!

Just because its a "rescue" or even a breed specific rescue doesn't mean they know anything about bully breeds and what is and is not acceptable or even what kind of people should be adopting them.

Save lives? Maybe. But how many dogs in the area they are trnsporting new dogs into could have been adopted. So, save one and cause the death of one since the adopter of a transported dog won't be adopting a local dog.

Not to mention, since they aren't likely to be doing proper temperament testing or home screening they may be killing more if an incident occurs and spurs BSL.

It's just another one of those shows for the furmommies to get off to. And the amount of plugs for Petfinder was just ridiculous. "I really wanted a new dog, so I went to Petfinder.com, where they list thousands of dogs up for adoption..." Scripted much?

All those "rescuers" pat each other on the backs over the dogs being "saved", but there's no safety net for those hundreds of dogs...what happens if the Pit Bull (oops, I mean, "American Bulldog mix") gets into a fight at the dog park and the guy wants to get rid of her? Then what? Off to Manhattan AC, that's what. Who is doing home checks on all these people? Is there any follow-up on these dogs after they're in their homes? The only follow-up that they showed was the "rescuer" calling the transport guy asking if the adopter seemed to like the puppy.

They also showed an elderly couple waiting to pick up a Lab puppy. Not sure I would place a puppy, especially a Lab, with old people...

There are dogs dying in every community across the country. You mean these people couldn't find a suitable dog at the local shelter? But oh, it's more noble to get a dog from the south where all those rednecks live That's the general vibe I get from the show. "Oh, look, we're saving all these puppies from the boonies and bringing them up to NY and Vermont and MA where they get diamond collars, pawdicures and dog bowls made out of crystal, isn't that wonderful?"

I also almost had a heart attack when the bulldog's mom snapped at one of the pups over the food.

I really don't know the specifics of the operation so I'm not going to speculate. All that I know is that the dog at that particular rescue was going to be PTS because she was a "pit bull" and there were pit bull specific laws in the town where she was held. She had a day to live and they transported her up to the rescue on that day. I don't know anything about the reasons all of the other dogs were going to be PTS but I do know that the only reason for that particular one was her breed.

You are right that just because it is a rescue they don't necessarily make the right decisions as far as who gets the dogs or what's unacceptable, but this particular rescue was probably the most strict with their qualifications for adoption of the ones that I looked at. Whether the dog they are adopting out is from 1 mile away or 100,000 miles away, adopting it to the wrong person is still a problem. We still face the problem of rescues being irresponsible no matter where the dogs are coming from. I haven't seen this show but from the sounds of it they go pick up dogs and adopt them out themselves (sometimes over the phone). Even with the risk of rescues being irresponsible I would rather see them adopting out dogs than these people.

---------- Post added at 08:52 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:48 PM ----------

Just to clarify...like I said, I know their system has faults. I just think it is a better system than that on the show. You definitely bring up legitimate points and I agree that either way they are stopping the adoption of local dogs.

I watched the show and I cried when I saw little pit female LeeLee being adopted. I'm sure no organization is perfect but it was really amazing to see all those people excited waiting for those dogs to arrive.

The woman's voice annoyed the crap out of me. Her methods and everything she said pissed me off. I made it to the part with the cute black and white pit bull puppies, had an "awww puppy" moment, then turned off the tv to go chain smoke my anger away.

this sounds like a horrific idea.

i'm all for long distance transportation for dogs like those in Ontario/Denver/MiamiDade... ppls pets who were tested and proven to be good dogs just had the bad luck to be in the wrong place.

but to just grab dogs from wherever for the sole reason that they're about to be euth adn take them elsewhere? not so hot on that idea. seems like problems waiting to blow up in our breeds' faces.

and, i honestly HATE reading stuff like: "so the furmommies can get off to". i consider myself a furmom. i have no kids, so i spend my time/money/energy on my two dogs. i get them birthday gifts, in the winter i get them clothes to keep warm when we're outside, they lay in bed with me at night, etc.

but i don't think it's fair to color everyone who likes to spoil their dogs with the brush strokes of degredation and sneering ugliness. I don't jack off to shows like this, or others similar (pit boss, etc) i know my breed, i know what she's capable of, but i love her all the same.

i think phrases like that and the conotation behind them could be left out. [/rant]

I actually like the show...her voice is a little annoying but I live in western NC so I'm used to that accent lol
I think (hope) they have a more in depth interview, etc with the potential adopters then what we see on the show.
I can at least make it through a full show; can't say the same for Pit Boss or most episodes of It's Me or the Dog.
I wish they'd bring Pitbulls and Parolees back on...

I like the show and what they try to do. I agree the shipping the dogs and approving over the phone is a little weird, but I think over all its a good show and nice thing they do for these dogs. Most of them seem to get great homes!

@ NC pit bull mommy I love the southern accent LOL!
