I had Dixies done at 4 months old-just about that age, alittle before-and it sucked!
She looked absolutly miserable afterwards. And she itched them, so we had to put an e-collar on her. Then she scruddbed them thru the e-collar anyways. They ended up dirty, and I was having to clean them and fight off any infection. They healed nicely, however I felt so bad for her. I passed on having the boys' ears done, just because I didnt want them to go thru that. However I am not at all against ear cropping if done professionally. Besides I dont think either one of my boys would have benefited as far as looks wise from having it done anyways. They have "shovel heads"

the dogs are miserable only when they feel the pain but when they heal they are fine. but you cant feel bad if you choose to do it to your dog like the original post. no one MADE you (you in general) crop your dogs ears so its just something that you have to deal with until your dog heals you cant feel bad it was a cosmetic surgery. but anytime a dog gets altered in anyway (even humans) we are miserable until the pain leaves then when they are ealed your happy with the results and the dog forgets

I'm still all for the "natural" look of the ears.... but that's just me..... I've seen some dogs on here with cropped ears that look great.... but I don't think I would ever actually take a dog in to have their ears cropped. If I got a rescue that already had cropped ears, that would be fine... it wouldn't sway my decision on whether to get it or not... but I'm still all for natural...

we cropped her ears because we want to breed her and possoibly show her in the future and in our area the cropped look sells puppies much faster. its been almost a week and kilo is acting completely normal. after the first she she was almost back to her normal self. she plays more than ever and we keep her ears very clean so they dont bug her that much. its not as bad as some people make it sound and i hope the people that strongly criticize this procedure also do the same when it comes to any other breed as well as docing tails, because i believe tails are much worse and the puppies are still awake when they do this. but kilo still loves me and her dad so everything is good around here!

that is one of the worst reasons to have cropped your dogs ears so that her puppies will sell faster in the area you live? to me its personal preference on ear cropping and if its for the show ring thats one thin but ou said "possibly show er in the future" so thats not even a stong possibliy. I am not trying to judge you but that is just a bad reason it would have sounded a lot better if it was just your personal preference. |

I wanted a Great Dane really bad back before I got Mollie.... and had I ever gotten one, I would have had her ears cropped, because uncropped ears on a Great Dane, to me, don't look right.... so I guess I'm straddling the fence huh???? On a bully, I wouldn't do it, on a Dane, I would.... but every Dane I've ever seen has had cropped ears, and my favorite movie is "The Ugly Dachshund".... Danes with uncropped ears are cute... but don't have that "Great Dane" look to me... in my opinion..

Danes with uncropped ears are cute... but don't have that "Great Dane" look to me... in my opinion.. And you're 100% right on with that opinion. I felt that he didn't look like a "real" Dane until I got his ears cropped. I just felt so horrible watching the pain he went through afterwards. A dane crop is longer than most crops and takes longer to heal properly. It took over 6 months for Armani's ears to heal.

For me the 1st crop was the hardest. I will admit I felt bad and didn't want to do it again. My dog didn't suffer though, it was my own sensitivity. They're always wobbly and groggy after surgery.
After a yard accident between a cropped and a natural eared dog I will always crop. Even if I am lucky enough to never have another accident I feel it's a good investment after spending $1000 to have my dog's ears reattached . I think cropped ears are easier to keep clean also. I have a 5yo that has ears that fold in and close off the ear instead of out like rose ears. She gets infections often and now has a hematoma. The costs and risks of surgery now are way more than a crop. |

That's actually a very valid reason. My dog, Lady Red, got her ear practically torn off in an altercation between her and one of my former foster dogs. The vet recommended that I let them remove the ear, but I was so freaked and hysterical about her not having an ear that I didn't listen. I spent an obscene amount of money having that ear re-attached, and she looks lopsided and has recurring infections in that ear.

i personally think dogs with crop ears look like shit. but dam boogieman, i said it again.. and ill say it again. your dogs are freaking so nice looking even with the crop'd ears.(i usually think dogs with croped ears are ugliyish)
I felt just fine when I got my dogs done. It's obvious they are traumatized for life over it though. |

With crop ears, it all depends on the vet. Sometimes you end up with a bad crop job and sometimes it will be a good crop jobs. I have seen many beautiful does with really bad crop jobs. A person needs to ask the vet for references and pictures before they decide at the vet.
I am not for or against cropping a dogs ears. I have one dog that has cropped ears and my other three do not have cropped ears. If I had the money at the time, I would have had my youngest two ears cropped. |
