I have a new iPhone and love it but every so often am stumped , so given that this is likely to be a topic I have a few questions for, over time, a thread dedicated to it seems like a good idea.
I know there is another Apple thread, but it looks like being a good one about exploitative practises in general so will leave that one alone for this. My particular question today is, how do I make my computer "see" the iPhone I have plugged in. I hear the little "donk" sound that says something has been connected, but get no visual display for opening it, nor is it showing on the list of external storage untis when I go to have a look at "computer" details. The part that has me puzzled is that I have had it connected before and am not aware of having done anything differently. The laptop is a Windows7 machine and I have Avira pro. could it be a setting there? Maybe I should just disable it for a minute while I check (I hate doing that ... have pictures of gremlins just waiting for me to relax the guard) TIA |

I was under the impression that it would not appear as a separate drive or anything and only interfaced with iTunes. I don't own an iPhone but my wife does and this is the impression I got through watching her. Install iTunes and see what happens.
If iTunes is already installed, start it manually from the Start Menu. |

Your iphone does not come up as an external drive when you plug it into a computer, it uses a protocol ("MTP" I suspect) that means it comes up with a funny icon in Windows Explorer under all the other drives.
But even then, all you get is a read-only drive that allows you to retrieve photos from the iphone, you can't actually copy anything to it or anything useful like that. Install itunes, jj. "They" have won. |

It has to be a setting here somewhere. and yes, I have iTunes installed and working well for music / podcasts etc thanks everyone. *adds* I suppose I should do the sensible thing and try posting them to flickr from the iPhone! ![]() |

When my iPhone is plugged into my computer I can see it in Windows Explorer like I would any external disc. The same goes for the iPad. But the files I want to copy are neither Music, Movies nor TV shows. |

. . . . . . . . . . ![]() I hear the *chirp* too, but doano nothin' about Windows or Explorer I even searched my System Profiler and it doesn't even show up as being attached via any of the the USB ports. I only see my iPhone through iTunes, as roughbarked indicated... ...and it only OPENS iTunes when you attach it if you'd chosen that in iTunes/Devices/Options/"open iTunes when this iPhone is connected". but the best advice to an iDevice User is to search "Support" @ Apple http://www.apple.com/ http://www.apple.com/support/ http://www.apple.com/support/iphone/ http://www.apple.com/iphone/tips/ |
