Default Design My Home Computer System
Users: Family of four (two teenagers). None of us is particularly tech-savvy (as if that isn't apparent).

What we desire:
  • Desktop PC
  • Laptop PC
  • Wireless router for home network
Primary uses:
  • Internet
  • Downloading music & video
  • Word/Excel/Outlook
Brands, costs, ideas? The Dell we have now has been less than stellar, so I'd be willing to pay a little more for something more reliable.

You should consider (if budget allows) going to all laptops.

We got rid of all of our desk tops and just use laptops now. We have a wireless printer that we love, too. Love that I can print to anywhere in the house. I just wish I knew how to set up a "network" for all of the laptops.

yup. docking stations are not that expensive...if you feel you have to have one.

I am wanting to set up a small network...i may make a thread about it. I just want to share a folder from 1 computer with 2 other computers across a wireless network with dozens of connection points.

I know this stuff ain't rocket science, but there's a glut of info out there to wade through. I seek straightforward advice.

EDIT: IF STRAIGHTFORWARD INFO IS EVEN POSSIBLE

Plus with laptops, if you have to cut and run (evacuate, disappear, etc.) just throw it in a bag and go. Oh and laptops have a smaller carbon footprint if your into that green crap.

this is the thing: versatility and portability.

my laptop is my work and home computer. i have a desktop from a few years ago that the family uses. but i use my laptop.

if i was picky about all the stuff that you can do easier on a desktop, i could just get a docking station and use my laptop for nothing but a tower.

i won't buy any more desktop computers.

We've only ever had two laptops and both of them got dropped so many times they were trash. Our one desktop has lasted for years and years and nothing on it is damaged.
