it won't boot no matter which option is selected.

Nline diagnosed it with a dead motherboard. If you know anyone with an Inspiron with a bad LCD or HD, let me know. I would like to "revive" it by doing the old Frankenstein.

I found a motherboard for 149 that is used, and one for 225 that is new. both are guaranteed. Not sure if i will try that...but mom has ordered a new and MUCH improved laptop.

in the interim, she will have to suffer with her desktop system. No TV in the office room.
I saw your 225 but I didn't see the 149 one. I was under the impression that you guys were unwilling to spend that kind of money on it.

The motherboard had a timer failure. It would boot simple OS like Dos but Windows or a 2.6 based Linux kernel would not boot.

Knoppix and BartPE both failed to boot on it.

Can't help you there, I have a much older one somewhere around here.

Are you certain it's a motherboard failure, I assume nline physically examined the motherboard? It happens, but a motherboard failure is pretty rare, and in my experience, when it does happen, nothing happens, no POST no setup nothing.

I have had the exact error you mentioned, once with an HP desktop. Windows sent an update down the line and it conflicted with some HP component and it stopped working. Would stop on some system file like tdi.sys or something. HP figured it out shortly thereafter but it did take a clean install to get it fixed.

we are.

but you can oftentimes find people with a laptop that has a broken LCD (and they see a repair cost of 200-400 bucks), so they sell it cheap.

if i could find the right deal....we might revive another computer. i am not really into buying a new motherboard, given your diagnosis (i am not SURE it would fix it). But i know the LCD and HD are good on it, so i could swap those into another one.

If i do that, it will be so she can give it to either her daughter, or maybe even me (since my laptop goes back to my company after we shut down at the end of this month).

It failed Dell diagnostics with a Chanel 1 timer failure. No ticks generated. I don't have a laptop post card but I suspect it would fail there too.

NLine, I am unwilling to spend that kind of money on it because I am not savvy enough to know what to do. I am very well satisfied with your diagnosis and your work, and I again thank you. BFFT is just a guy....and he wants to mess with it LOL. I would be happy to let him have it for his experiment. I hope that he can find the parts to build Frankenputer.

you know me too well. That about sums it up.

and i fully expect that if i am lucky enough to find what i am looking for, and within the meager price range i am seeking, it will still be quite some time.

gonna have to shake a lot of trees to see what falls out. I think that the "pros" scavenge what is worthwhile from ebay long before someone like me would have a chance.

That and the machine is still fairly new and not so old not to be worth repairing for some. That drives the prices up. Your not finding anything better then I found, 'cept that 150 one. I missed that but I woudln't bet it being not a DOA either.

Rp,

Not a problem. If he can get it going then great. He's tackling this as I would have.
