i still don't get it .... now how much does cox/suddenlink and msn primium cost you per month .... and tv cable (extended basic, no premium movie channels). Then I pay about $21.95 for the MSN. Like Lee, I used dialup MSN when I lived in the sticks before wireless of any kind was available, so I've had it for years, and used it for business. I just didn't want to mess with changing it when I finally moved here and was able to get high speed. So I kept my other service. Plus I just like it. |

That's true Kay, and lets say were in the middle of nowhere with our laptop, and all you have is a phone line... welp... we can still get online.
Ya know, MSN does offer its services with the option of not paying for the internet provider fees if you already have an internet provider... It's cheaper, but, why would I want to do that? Besides, Kay once told me her son uses it too... wasn't that correct? |

MAV, we actually do the same thing. We have high-speed cable at the house and also subscribe to MSN as well. The reason? Well, we used dial up for quite sometime at the office because cable period is not available in the area. Recently we switched over to wireless provided from NetWest (our host) because we were able to retrieve a signal from one of the buildings downtown. We keep MSN as a backup just in case we still have to "dial up" due to a malfunction, which was a good idea because it did happen in January. NetWest had to switch our IP and DNS addresses and then it was all good, but still took 2 business days... and the internet is crucial. Now I'm thinking, what did we all do without the internet in the first place? Must have been a lonely world. i did msn from 1994 until i switched over to cable in 5 years ago ... telephone service was so unreliable .... most issues were with the tele company not the IP. |

Paying $20+ a month for service they will give you for less is a waste. If you have broadband via another carrier they will reduce the rate. You may have to argue with them to get it but they will do it. AOL offers it's service for FREE if you use another ISP to connect. Again you have to argue with them to get it.

At the rate AOL is going, in a few months they'll be paying you to surf their site. Time-Warner is still pulling its hair out over that merger. Anyway, if you really want a dial-up backup, why not pick up a Net Zero disk next time you're at Best Buy or Circuit City? $9 a month sure beats $21-$25. Bet there are as many Net Zero access numbers around as MSN or AOL. |

And, for the sake of the topic, I have also had Suddenlink problems on occasion over the last few months, but no more than with Cox...and at least Suddenlink has the excuse of making the conversion. I have also found Suddenlink's tech support to be better, actually, than Cox's. But only time will tell. If Grande would ever get around to adding my street to their service area, I might consider switching, if only because Suddenlink's charging over $90 now for analog cable and Internet access. But right I'm usually connecting at almost 3.5 Mbps and there's no way I'd consider dumping that for DSL, so Suddenlink's about the only game in town.

For sure... all the providers rent the lines from other companies. That would include all the big ones, AOL, MSN, CompuServe, SBC, NetZero, People PC and so on...
Makes more sense to them, but these companies who manage hundereds of thousands of phone lines will be in trouble soon enough. Cut-backs are most likely already in process. |

I see after looking it up that MSN Premium offers a bundle of various utilities (anti-virus, etc.) along with access, so I guess conceivably that might be worth some extra money on top of whatever obscene amount of money somebody's paying for broadband. But it looks like MSN Premium like $10 a month if you bring your own access?? I'm still not sure what's costing over $20.

That's true Kay, and lets say were in the middle of nowhere with our laptop, and all you have is a phone line... welp... we can still get online. Since it hairlips Nline and MV so, I'll check tomorrow with MSN to see if I can get it cheaper since I have my own high speed connection already. But yes, MV, there are lots of bundled extras that I get with the MSN Premium that I don't want to give up. |
