A lot of LOTR, especially the shire was based on the landscape in the village where Tolkien lived then though a lot of it is all swallowed up by Birmingham suberbs now.

Why didn't the eagles just fly Frodo to mount doom when they could easily take down the Nazgul and Sauron

Holy crap! I forgot, I found this last week, someone, independantly on youtube came to the same conclusion!
