i agree with you in the sense of the "idol" thing.. so much of it is image. however, i'm not sure you're fair to people who "just" sing. Some people are vocalists, just like some are guitar players. I don't think that's really fair not to call them real musicians. Most good vocalists write there own stuff. Some don't, some just have a great voice and charisma, imo, they certainly qualify as genuine musicians though. just like a guitar or keyboard or drums player would.
a percussionist or pianist gets recognition for being in a band. the people that do most of the work for an "idol" record dont get ****, its all praise to the person who got told what to do.

and i also think that the session musicians probably dont even bother trying to write "new" music, they just stick to the same boring formula becuase they know it doesnt matter anyways, people will still buy/acquire the cd just cos of the person up the front, regardless of the quality and effort put into making the music.

and then, people get so used to the same crap being put out they dont know that real music is out there.... which in turn ends up killing the music industry of proper bands/groups etc etc.
