it's totally obnoxious and trendy, but i've caught myself watching it a half a dozen times or so. It's not as bad as you think. Once in a while there is a good performer/singer on. I hate pop music, but sometimes they do other stuff and it's not bad. Last year's runner up, Katherine something, actually was a really good vocalist. She could sing anything, she sounded a bit like Norah Jones maybe. Anyways, it's not as bad as you think, but it's pretty obnoxious nevertheless. It's something to watch if your around girls or with a crowd or something, I watched it with a bunch of my sisters hot freinds once, they seemed to like it. one can't always watch the Sopranos and 24 and good shows like that in a group enviroment.

I was the same way though, the first few years it was on the concept just sickened me, the very notion of it sickened me. But, truly, it's not that bad, especially if someone with a good voice just goes on there and knocks em dead. It's kinda cool to see some soul singer win over a crowd or something.

elliot yamin (sp?) was the best vocalist last year imo. his performance of moody's mood for love was spot on.

i enjoy the show ... i don't vote or anything but i like talking about it at work. three nights a week is too much though.

so far this year i like the beat box guy.

I am addicted to this show. I have been a fan since the first season.

The reasons why i like the show? i love watching the performances of the good contestants. I enjoy seeing someone decent or very good, sing a well known/heard song in their own unique ways. Its a competition at its core and its entertaining.

The first half of the season is mostly a showcase of americas worse, and while its fun to cringe at the horrible people, i prefer the show alot more when its past that and down to the top 24.

elliot yamin (sp?) was the best vocalist last year imo. his performance of moody's mood for love was spot on. I agree with you there. Honestly, he was the best vocalist. He was also the most consistent, always had good to great performances. My favorite yamin performance was his rendition of Stevie's "if you really love me"

I watch it occasionally, but only the early auditions episodes purely for the entertainment value of Simon Cowell being brutally honest with people, and to be fair that's all I think he does, he isn't being mean for the sake of it... well maybe a little, but some people just ask for it.

And then of course when he tells someone they can't sing, they all try to argue with him... I mean what does the A&R exec for Sony BMG know about music!?! I mean honestly.

I think it was Texas but he told some girl she was terrible and she came out all in tears, so her mother got irate and asked the other host where Simon comes from and he said "He's British." And she comes back with "He should go back to British!"

I did laugh.

people that support the "music" that these "artists" record are killing the music industry. its bad enough as it is

sure, some of them can sing, but thats pretty unfair to the real people that write + perform music

these "idols" get lucky, show they can sing, and then get sent to a studio where they get told what to sing, and the rest is done for them. they dont compose and arrange, they dont play any instrument, hardly any of them write a single note/word. then they get millions of dollars.

i agree with you in the sense of the "idol" thing.. so much of it is image. however, i'm not sure you're fair to people who "just" sing. Some people are vocalists, just like some are guitar players. I don't think that's really fair not to call them real musicians. Most good vocalists write there own stuff. Some don't, some just have a great voice and charisma, imo, they certainly qualify as genuine musicians though. just like a guitar or keyboard or drums player would.

a percussionist or pianist gets recognition for being in a band. the people that do most of the work for an "idol" record dont get ****, its all praise to the person who got told what to do.

and i also think that the session musicians probably dont even bother trying to write "new" music, they just stick to the same boring formula becuase they know it doesnt matter anyways, people will still buy/acquire the cd just cos of the person up the front, regardless of the quality and effort put into making the music.

and then, people get so used to the same crap being put out they dont know that real music is out there.... which in turn ends up killing the music industry of proper bands/groups etc etc.

well your problem is with commercial music no? if so, yeah, most people I know have the same complaints, including me. I just think it's wrong the way you criticized singers as if they aren't making music too. Someone who is a great vocalist, is every bit the musician as others in the band. Sure, maybe they get too much attention, but a talented vocalist ought not be slagged off like you seem to be doing.

We had a discussion at work that was related to this....

The huge problem with American Idol is that they only choose people who fit into their concept of what an "American Idol" should be. Sadly, this means that you end up with a bunch of homogenous crap. Imagine if Janis Joplin would have tried out for American Idol...she wouldn't have even made it past the first audition. [rofl]

haha yeah, i guess so about the commercial music thing.

being a great vocalist is one thing, but being a great vocalist, writing all the vocal parts and all the rest of it is what should be rewarded.

yeah, that is generally true..much of it is about image, but honestly, in the shows i've seen they do have genuinely good singers who do totally break the mold. They have some huge Aretha Franklin type big ass african american girls, and tonight they had some fat geek dude with an afro... and he didn't look at alll like a popstar, and he faired very well.
In general, your criticism is valid, but honestly, you do have performers break the mold. The dude that won last year, i saw him the last two nights which is all i saw all season, anyways, the dude was an absolute iconoclast, grey haired, dorky, but he had a charisma and a fantastic performer. basically, he just had a sort of unexplainable stage presence. Kinda like kitsch lounge singers, ie: Tom jones, or Neil Diamond or E.P. for example. They don't necessarily look the part, but they know how to knock a crowd dead.

the whole image/idol thing though is basically revolting. You'll see these posers get up there, and every little part of these preening clowns is coordinated. you know, they have the hair style, and an earing, and every last bit of thier outfit is coordinated to give an "image" this kind of phoney behavior just sickens me. like these d(*ckhead posers for example:

http://z.about.com/d/countrymusic/1/...alflattsrc.jpg

or...

you know what i'm saying...every little part of their outfit is out of some magazine or some PR person that dresses them everyday? the thing is, these dudes act like they just happened to throw this on, and are trying to be low profile around town[rolleyes] [thumbup]
they actually work at a recording studio (converted historic house) that is literally my next door neighbors..anyways, these idiots are extremely popular, Rascall Flatts, and they walk around town in these coordinated little outfits that look positively ridiculous. In fact, most every "musician" that goes in there needs a good smack. There is also a christian pop group (basically a boy band/ image tailored phoney creation) called Jars of Clay. A couple of them drive these huge ass ridiculous Humvees...yeah dude, it's not like your not attention starved or anything, driving around the city in a vehicle like that.

anyways, the phoneyness of these "idols" is just dripping.
