Default Let's face it, "Afghan girl" photo is famous only because she has green eyes
The famous Afghan Girl photo, that has became famous all over the world as a symbol of afghan people, owe its popularity to the fact that the girl portrayed has green eyes.
Green eyes are striking beautiful, and catch the attention of the observer a lot more than black one's does. Also, they are unusual for a middle eastern woman.
Were her eyes brown she would not have became so famous all over the world.
So, in the end, my point: traits associated with western ideals are indeed more beautiful and considered beautiful all over the world.

I think she's famous because she loks like a deer caught in the spotlights of a car just before it's hit. Kind of rare to see a human like that.

she looks creepy to you because she has darker skin and doesn't look like the ugly nordic woman you have on your avatar

Perhaps she looks strange to you because she doesn't fit the ideal of the feminist Western "beauty"...

There are many Afghans with light eyes. I think she was just an example for people in the West who really did not know much about this place.

She fit in the ideal of western beauty as average looking girl , nothing special . the big problem is her eyes looks creepy they aren't harmonious with her face . Also the one who made the picture, try to put in value her eyes, for make a deep look . The reason why that looks creepy .

She has changed a lot now
She is still ugly , but looks more normal with age

google "afghan girl" and the page is even more full of her picture , nothing to do with the creepy stuff.
That has something to do , she looks creepy by the way

Yes, her eyes are pretty and they catch the "eye"; but that is not the only reason. I find her face harmonious and really pretty. Apart from the dust and grime she is pleasant to look at. That color pigment is common in Afghan people, and her pose shows confidence and poise in a lady which is suppressed in the Afghan area. I doubt the magazine was trying to pull users on basis of looks or pseudo-European looks / pigment factors. It should the boldness and relentlessness of the Afghan people and how they have been ostracized and manipulated and tried to be conquered by the western nations and neighboring countries. She shows across confidence, and the Afghan attitude of "will never give up". The people are strong willed and fighters to the last. That is what the image shows. Not some theory off western looks being better. She has nothing of western ideals in her. I doubt most of the world looking at her said "ooh she has Western pigmented eyes, how nice". But rather an innuendo of what I mentioned, above, about Afghanistan and its relentless people. They will never give up, never be conquered. Graveyard of nations.

Traits associated with western ideals are a personal PoV. Cannot be generalized for the world to like a certain segment / sector as an overall average. That is unfair to write.

What you mean made. It is not a touched up image. Or you trying to say something else.

I do admit though that Western features are at times given greater value in the east...Nowadays the most "beautiful" Indian actresses, even in the south, are the ones with fair skin and often sport fake green contacts.

I never said it was a touched up image . The person who took the picture, use a special lens for make her eyes in a contrast and make deep effect

I really doubt that. It is just a normal click. Of course in high resolution. Why is it so hard for you to see, that a person from this area can have such striking eyes. I know it is not 'that' common, but still possible. Just not fair.

Of course he is going to use special lenses and get high resolution images. They need it for a cover unit. But I doubt her eyes were highlighted. What you think her eyes really are. Is that a false representation...?

I never said it wasn't her real eyes color . Where I said that ?
By the way , her eyes was obviously put in a some light, if it wasn't the picture would not looks like that . And light always influence how eyes looks .

For example , my eyes always has different colors on pictures , that depend of the light

She's Pashtun if I recall correctly. Anyways, stupid thread. She's famous because of her "stare" more than anything in my opinion. It's like she's looking into your soul in a way.
