IMO the animosity towards atheists boils down to the fact that the 'believers' feel fundamentally threatened by them.

Not to troll, but its a fact. Its just another sign of how illogical religious beliefs are. But don't take my word for it. We all have a choice to believe what we want after all, no matter how illogical it is.

At least in this modern era, the beginning of the 21st century, the prospect of atheism seems to becoming more tenable to more people. Well...and less so in other places.
